in the city:
shopping (melbourne central, burke street, chapel street)
melbourne aquarium
cricket/football
national gallery of victoria
yarra cruise
southbank/crown casino
royal botanic gardens
albert park and msac
visit for restaurants and the such:
docklands, lygon street (little italy), williamstown

outside the city centre:
sovereign hill (in ballarat, highly recommend it)
great ocean road and surf coast
mornington peninsula
phillip island (penguin parade and wildlife)

if ur into nature and want to see the australian bush head for:
the grampians national park
wilsons promontory national park
(these places are a fair trip by car but well worth it)

if u hav a family ul find that theres lots of free stuff for kids in and around the city at fed square and birrarung marr.

if ur coming soon theres also some good events on like the australian tennis open, australian grand prix and the one day cricket series against india (hopefully) and nz

Sunday afternoon - why not try the market on the Esplanade in St Kilda. Easy access (10 mins) from the city by tram (numer 96 from Bourke St). And you get to enjoy being by the water & see Luna Park (kinda a landmark...not that Melbourne has many of them compared to Sydney)

They have a rule for the market - the person who owns the stall makes the goods. Something along those lines. Makes for some unique gifts to remember your trip by & take home for others

I agree the Ocean Road is an absolute must even if you can only spare a few days for the trip. Amazing.

You might find this website of some use to you

You do not say where you are coming from, so it is harder to give you a better answer.

1) The Melbourne Zoo is always a good attraction.
2) Healesville Sanctuary which is roughly 50kms east of Melbourne.
3) Both the lookouts on the RIALTO Tower and the EUREKA Tower.
4) Boat trip on the Yarra River (if the weather is fine).
5) Depending on when you are coming to Melbourne, there are a number of events one may wish to see.
(a) Australian Open Tennis -- 14 January to 26th January.
(b) The Grand Prix motor racing in March
(c) Moomba Festival -- Late March.
(d) ANZAC Day March -- April 25
(e) Melbourne Cup -- 4 November

6) There are a number of excellent restaurants, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Greek, French etc that you may wish to eat at.
7) The Australian National Gallery of Victoria.
8) Crown Casino.
9) Any of the Theatres where some excellent Plays are playing.

DreadSmurf
The Dandenong Ranges, East of Melbourne are really nice, Puffing Billy( runs from Belgrave through to Gembrook, really great trip), William Ricketts Sanctuary & Rhododendron Gardens at Olinda.
Australian Open starts next Monday
Grand Prix in March
Moomba
4 seasons in one day...sometimes 5...lol

What are you into?

The city is just simply fabulous.
I recommend Melbourne central - for shopping, as well as Queen Victoria market (Sunday) for bargains!

There is a suburb called Carlton, its very nice there. They have a bakery called "Threshermans". They coffee guy has been working there for over 10 years, and he will make the best coffee you've ever had! Honestly!!

Also, do go to the Eureka Tower.

And china town! Haha, its good there!

Go to Fed Sq. You can see a massive Ferris Wheel!!
Go on it!
But don't get ice cream from the guy who sells ice cream there, i've watched him...hes a bit unhyjenic.

Swanston street = good shopping too.

South bank for dinner!
Make sure you sit outside, they have fire displays!

Have so much fun!

Depends what time you are going there... you shouldnt just stay in Melbourne, you could also go around the whole of Victoria (except that's a four week holiday)

Jacks the name
Where are you from?? and im from melbourne so take my word

Melbourne Zoo is a good place

Eureka tower is a great place you can see the whole of melbourne

If you are in to sport try having a tour of the MCG or Telstra Dome both great stadiums MCG is probably the best sporting oval in the world

Do something on the Yarra

Australian Open is on soon you might want to see some of that

Crown Casino. is very entertaining great place
