We're planning a trip to Australia in July/August '08. We have friends in Adelaide. What other places to go to

We were thinking of Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Cairns and Brisbane, and we would be there for 4 or 5 weeks. Why should we choose any of these places? We know that they are spread apart, but we want to have good choices. Give us your opinion. Thank you!
Additional Details
We plan to visit 3 cities, and Adelaide is a must. Coming from Canada, we can get a pass from Qantas that allows us to do 3 destinations. Our point of entry is either Sydney or Melbourne. That takes care of 2 destinations. What should our third be?

It will be our winter here but not too cold. Adelaide is a great place and you should visit Kangaroo Island, The Barossa Valley and Hahndorf.
You could hire a car and drive The Great Ocean Road to Melbourne seeing the Twelve Apostles on the way and some great scenery along the coast. 3-4 days needed to enjoy. Overnight stays could be at Mt Gambier, Warnambool,Lorne or Portsea. If staying at Portsea you can take the ferry from Queenscliff
Melbourne is a fantastic city with lots going on.You should spend at least 3 days here.
You could then fly to Hobart for 2-3 days from Melbourne . Visit Port Arthur and Richmond.Fly back to Sydney to see the Opera House The Harbour Bridge , ferry to Manly, Darling Harbour and the Aquarium to name a few. Spend at least 3 days here.
Dependent upon how long you are in Adelaide you could fly to Brisbane or Cairns or extend the days on the above itinerary.
You will have a great time wherever you visit.

Once you have seen Adelaide and South Australia, the rest of Australia will be a let down !
Adelaide is the best kept secret in Ozz !
Don't tell anyone though ;))

wow July and August can be so cold and miserable down South . But you need to have a little look at Sydney , it really has such a beautiful harbour. I would be heading North as soon as possible. From Brisbane up the weather will be beautiful . Do you have time to fly into the Gold Coast then hire a car or campervan and drive to Cairns. You would need at least a week to do that so you could call into some fascinating places such as Airlie Beach this is a little tropical paradise and they have a harbour called Shute harbour where you can get a boat to many of the islands in The whitSundays group. You can get some cold nights around the brisbane GoldCoast area in july and August but the days should be superb and the further North you go the warmer it will get.

Unless you enjoy being wet and cold don't go to Melbourne. I live here so I know what I'm talking about!

You should go to QLD or WA at that time of year - it's sunny and warm and will be a nice contrast to Adelaide.

i think perth is an often overlooked beautiful choice. you can take the train across from adelaide. perth is still pretty nice in the winter and there are beautiful beaches. you can travel a bit down south of perth as well and it's really nice.

tuppenybitz
it will be mid winter so if you want some warmth better to head north
surfers paradise,cairns,Brisbane

though in my opinion you cant miss Sydney

Australia is huge and 4 weeks is not long enough to see much unless you can afford to fly from city to city

gold coast or Sydney!!! Sydney is good for all the sights and places to see, gold coast is good because we have theme parks and beautiful beaches, both are very good places to visit

Scuzzlebutt M
Wilpeena Pound St Mary's peak in the Finders Ranges North of Adelaide, how are you going to get about, that would help awnser your question.

Mel
I think you should stick to Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. 4/5 weeks isn't a lot of time but should be sufficient if you cut down your list.

If you fly from Adelaide, to Melbourne to Sydney, you will keep airfare costs at a minimum.

July/August Melbourne will be quite cold, Sydney will be comfortable.
