We are moving to Brisbane in January 2009 and I'd like some advice on great family oriented suburbs.?

Which family oriented suburbs would allow rent at $600? And what are the best primary schools and kindergartens in Brisbane - in which suburbs.

The best suburbs in Brisbane are the western suburbs (but only the ones on the north side of the river).

The best state primary school in Brisbane is Ironside State School in St Lucia. It's very near the University of Queensland so it caters for a large number of children of academics and has maintained very high standards over many years as expected by its demanding and knowledgeable parents. In the same area, you also find Indooroopilly, Chapel Hill, Fig Tree Pocket, Kenmore and Kenmore SS all of which are excellent. The western suburbs are a high socio economic area throughout and that is reflected in the quality of its schools.

Any kindergarten in that area will also be of a high standard - parents out there are well educated and demanding where their children's education is concerned. Fig Tree Pocket has a Montessori primary school (as well as a kindergarten) and Indooroopilly has a highly respected Montessori kindy.

The suburbs are all very peaceful, green and leafy with excellent services and shopping, bikeways and parks. $600 per week should be enough to find fairly good housing in the area.

Everton Park. Cute, quiet and leafy.

What about the Redcliffe Peninsula? It's a beach side community, with regular buses into the city and access to railway. Only 1/2 an hour from the airport too.
There is a wide range of public and private schools available.
And the rents are reasonable.

I'd look at the western suburbs, but be aware of the prices in that area.
You can find out more about each suburb here

Ozmaniac is right. The Western and Northern suburbs are the way to go....... Toowong, Taringa, Indroopilly Kenmore, Chapel Hill, Fig Tree Pocket, Bardon, Mitchelton, Ferny Grove, Albany Creek. For $600 a week you shouldn't have too many problems find a nice house in these areas. I would steer clear of anything to the far west south of the river and the south side all together. If you were on a tighter housing budget and wanted a nicer house still in a good area other areas that are family friendly are.... Bellbowrie, Moggil, Fig Tree Pocket, Petrie and surrounding areas, Stafford areas.

Your going to start a war with this question everyone will have their own opinion on which is the best. I personally would say the eastern suburbs out around Manly which is right on Moreton Bay and we have some good schools Manly West primary or you have a choice of the Moreton private schools one for boys and one for girls.
But you need to know about suburbs you need to stay away from Inala,Durack,Darra,Willowong,Springwood,... just to name a few

I live in Kangaroo Point and have brought up 3 kids in this peaceful suburb. It is near the city and south bank and is also close to ferries and the busway station with the train station not far away. There are several schools such as East Brisbane State School, West End State School, St Jospehs and many many more. There are many kindergartens such as Nazareth to name one. Kangaroo Point is very central with the cost of living very affordable. In my youth, i lived on a rent of $150 a week. My daughter is now an adult and stills lives in Kangaroo Point but is renting and is only paying $400 a week. This suburb is very family oriented with parks galore.
hope this helps

There are not really any family oriented suburbs in Brisbane but there are lots of them in Magical Melbourne!
