We have a mate with dual citizenship coming to stay with us here in California. Does anyone know any customs?

maybe something that he wouldn't expect - pleasant surprise. I mean food, customs, light hearted stuff. I've never been.........Thank you for your serious answers.

If you can get some Vegemite (which I think might be banned in he US), if he likes it it would be a good gesture. I for one love vegemite on toast for brekkie.

Have a bbq for dinner one night. If you can get some Kangaroo meat, but it has to be cooked properly, medium rare at most.

Ask him about drop bears (it's an Aussie joke, he should get it)

Get some Tooheys Extra Dry beer for him, not fosters we only export that we don't drink it.

Some nice American chocolate would be a nice gift.

Another thing, many Aussies like milk in their coffee, which I know isn't always the done thing in the US. Your milk also tastes different, so don't be offended if he doesn't like it.

Australian and American customs are pretty similar. Tooheys Extra Dry is a great idea and have a BBQ with some sausages and tomato sauce (I think you guys call it ketchup) with bread and salad. Make sure you have some beers in the house! Take him to Maccas, he will love seeing how different it is eg you guys call some burgers sandwhiches which I thought was really funny and your McFlurries are huge!! Good luck, he will love it!!

I was going to tell you not to take him to an 'Australian' pub or steakhouse, but on reflection, it would be a fun thing to do. He'll ROFLHAO when he sees what Americans think represents Australia. Seriously though, Austrlians and Californians are generally pretty similar. We have a great deal of exposure to your 'culture' and he'll probably feel right at home. One thing though is that Aussie men don't normally drink cocktails - introduce him to a cocktail happy hour.

Depends where the dual citizenship is for? Duh! Hard to know customs if you dont know the country!

They're coming from Australia? If so, I'm not sure they'll get much in way of pleasant surprises...they're a pretty 'open' people in Australia, and California is certainly not from my experiences. :)

Prison officer
I am assuming that you are British because you use the word Mate as opposed to friend. If he is British, take him to Alcatraz Prison, museums, hope for a mild Earthquake. I don´t know what you are talking about customs. British or American customs? Drinking is a British custom. See if you can find a British Pub where you live. If you serve him beer, serve it at room temp. Whiskey without ice. You can use Fortnight as opposed to two weeks. I have no idea how to cook food as they cooked in England. American food is far superior to English food. I spent a lot of time in England. My mates were Prison Officers who worked at H.M. Prison Wormwood Scrubs. Chinese Food, or Japanese food would be nice. My friends visited my family and had a great time. I cooked such things as meatloaf, mashed potatoes, with vegetables. Pancakes for breakfast, batter mixed with one egg, milk, sliced apple, cinnamon. Lunch, Tuna Sandwich, or B.L.T. on toast with mayo. I have traveled extensively, and I always ate what the natives ate. It was an adventure. My British Colleagues liked American Food. It was their adventure.

to be honest, i'm getting a bit sick of the questions posted in this top by american's.....it infuriates me how ignorant you are!!!!!!

if he's australian, his customs will be all the same as yours, unless he is jewish or of some other religion like that.
