Weather in August in Brisbane (will I get a tan?!)? |
Hi guys,
I'm going to be in Brisbane this August and I'm wondering what sort of weather to expect. I know it's low to mid teens but what does this mean in terms of chillyness and clothes - is it shorts and t-shirt weather still, or is it jumper? And most importantly, when the sun's out, will I get away with lying on the beach in a bikini?
Cheers!

The swing is huge between night and day.
As of this morning, the temp went down to 5 Centigrade (around Brisbane airport), and now it is about 19 degree. It goes up as soon as it cools down, and it drops as soon as it warms up, so... it is common to have 10-15 degree swing in a day.
We had some warm days about two weeks ago, but not in the last couple of days.
In August, the weather should be 10 to 23-25 I suppose, at least that's the average.
If you stay under the sunlight, no wind, you might be able to get a tan. I think, and I think you would actually feel hot under constant sunlight. But don't expect a tropical warm sun. The temp peaks at around 2 pm, then normally it starts droppiong.
Just pray it is not windy. Just to remind you that normally, August has many windy days. The Westerly wind is chilling.
Perhaps going up to Townsville or Cairns is better to get sun tan :-) |

The average maximum temperature in Brisbane in August is 21.8° with 80% of maxima falling between 19.1° and 24.8°. The highest ever was 32.8°C in 1946.
The average minimum temperature in Brisbane in August is 10.3° with 80% of minima falling between 6.8° and 13.6°. The lowest ever was 2.7°C in 1964.
Brisbane has median rainfall in August of 29.4mm on 7 days. It is statistically the driest month of the year.
If the winter westerlies come in they are usually annoying but not too cold as they are warmed by the foehn effect. They can extend into September. They occur when the high pressure systems are in their winter position around 30°S.
Work on mild to warm days and cool to mild nights as far as clothes are concerned and while the water might be a bit cool for swimming, you will certainly get a tan on the beach. Watch out, though, the UV index in August is moderate to high, perhaps 5-7. If you are used to lower UV levels, you could burn easily. |

Who told you low to mid teens? That may be so first thing in the morning. It warms up to low to mid twenties (Celsius) pretty quickly. I was up there a couple of weeks ago, and I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts during the day. As a gentleman of advancing years, my bikini days have passed. |

In August in Brisbane, temps are usually between 5 celcius overnight and 22 celicus during the day. It's sunny, but very, very windy!
In August, we get the notorious "westerleys" which are fierce, and cold. MOre likely to get windburn than sunburn!
You can lie on the beach in a bikini at any time during the year - but it depends on what you call cold, cool or chilly. My friends in the UK find August in Brisbane nice - Brisbanites are still wearing jumpers!
If cold to you means snow, then Brisbane in August will be nice spring weather.
If you're in Brisbane in early August, don't miss out on the Ekka, which is our annual Fair. It's on between 8 - 18 August 2007. |

I agree with most of the responses. August isn't really 'beach and bikini' season over here, that normally starts in September. 'Ekka' time is known for its high winds (and second season of the flu). Also, we're having an unusally cold winter here, well for us...
In saying that, it depends on where you are coming from...i.e. England, then you'll think its hot - bring only shorts. Bermuda, you'll freeze, bring a big jacket. Anything in between, I'd say bring light layers, sometimes the air conditioning in buildings can be colder than outside so its nice to have a light layer to put on.
As for getting a tan, QLD is the skin cancer capital of the world...you're better of faking it :)
ps. Ekka is the Royal Queensland Show, happens 9-18th August this year |

it is very sunny & if you lay on the beach??!!?? out of the wind you will definitely get a tan. by the way, the only beach in brisbane is at south bank parklands. if you plan to go to gold coast beaches or sunshine coast beaches - beware of the winds that spring up in the p.m.
sunbaking anytime from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be very comfortable.
most people are wearing jeans and t-shirts in the middle of the day because of the cold westerly winds at the moment - with jumpers for a.m. and after 4 p.m. - even scarves, skivvies, beanies & gloves!!lol
sure hope august is warmer. |

Sunny 1st
|
It's hard to predict exactly what it's going to be like, because some days could be absolutely freezing (definitely bring a jumper) and other days might be lovely clear blue sky sunny days, but if you dress in layers you'll be fine (have the bikini underneath just in case) - I can honestly say that I've NEVER worn a bikini in August in Brisbane though. Usually I wait for November and December to put the swimmers on.
August in Brisbane is also the time of the famous EKKA (a big show) - and there's usually about a week of dreadfully strong cold winds, quite often during the Ekka week. So often it will be balmy early in August, and everyone relaxes and thinks Winter is over, and then suddenly, wham, the winds come and everyone remembers it's still Winter and don't pack away the woolly clothes quite yet.
Have a good holiday. |
