Sydney in July/August is generally mild and dry but it can get cold on occasion. The further you are from the coast, the colder it gets in the mornings and they get frosts in western Sydney. Melbourne is cold and wet in July/August.
Sydney's climatic averages are here:
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/tables/cw_066062_All.shtml
You will see that it rains, on average, one day in three and the average maximum temperature is 17°C.
In Melbourne it rains one day in two and the average maximum is 14°C. Melbourne's climatic averages are here:

July and August in Australia is their winter time and it is COLD. My boyfriend lives about 6 hours west of sydney and you will need to pack jeans and some sweaters! I never pictured australia as a cold place until I went in July, but there was ice on the windshield (windscreen) in the am just to give you an idea. It does get cold there and even snows in some parts so dont make the same mistake I did and show up in a tank top and sandles thinking oz is sunny and warm 24/7 lol You will LOVE it, have a blast!!!!!!! |

it averages in the day 15-180c. Night can be down to 3oc. So aim for pants l/s top and jumper as well as a coat. As for rain...not much we are in a drought but be prepaired. I live in Melbourne |

oh it gets cold alright, i live in the heart of sydney and its gets cold but keep in mind that with the weather lately it constantly changes like recently one day it was 33 degrees and the next day was 17 degrees so be careful when packing ur suitcase! |
|

But Why??
|
In the south east part of the continenet it gets quite cold during our winter months and catches unsuspecting tourists by surprise. So bring warm clothes. |

Hi, it gets generally cold here, bring a good coat, I live in my uggies in winter its starts to get a bit chilli in the end of May and continues through to August. Now in October we are having some stinkin hot days... A good coat, pair of boots, some jeans and a few good jumpers, a scarf or 2 and you'll be right. It snows in Jindabyne, Threadbo, and south from there...We are in drought mode over here, so rain is little. Man enjoy the hospitality of the the Aussie's you'll bloody lov it!!! |

Melbourne can have 4 seasons in a day, but in midwinter, temps usually a low of 4, and max of 13 degrees centigrade, with showers possible, as in Sydney, which is several degrees warmer, and doesn't need nighttime heating. |
