What's it like to live in Aussie?
- low population (21 million)
- good transportation system (particularly Melbourne)
- great beaches (Gold Coast!)
- fresh food
- fresh air (NOTHING like it, just breathing the air is a treat!)
- great health care... if you have health problems or thinking of old age, going to Australia is a good move. Public hospitals are often better than private ones
- clothes are expensive
- makeup is expensive (Aussie brands are cheaper outside of Aussie!)
- cigarettes are expensive (a way to discourage people from smoking)
- foods that are bad for you are expensive (ex. soda)
- lots of things are more expensive in Australia than in the States!!!
- limited brand selection (in order to protect Aussie industry), you will NOT find Hersheys in the supermarket
- laidback culture - great if you're the type that easily gets stressed
- warning: shops close at 5/6 pm except for 1 day a week (9 pm Thursdays in Sydney; 9 pm Fridays in Melbourne)
- great food variety (from all the immigrants that are there)
- very unique flora and fauna
- generally cool save for winter and summer (extremely hot)
- hardly any poor people!
- education: Aussie citizens can study on loan from the government and start paying back only when they are working and at a certain salary level. Great if you have kids and don't want to worry about the money for their education
- the FLIES are crazy at certain times of the year
I love Australia despite a lot of things there being more expensive than in other parts of the world and the stores closing so early! It's a wonderful place to live. I suggest you visit and stay for at least 3 weeks to immerse yourself in Aussie culture before making a decision to move. |

lol what belinda said is a bit exaggerated .
we do have those things but you don't see them that often :)
australia is possibly the best counrty in the world!
hot weather
laid back people
easy going lifestyle
beaches which are close to pretty much wherever you live.
milo :)
its not over populated like the u.s
you can go up to the shops in your pyjamas with no shoes and no one take a second glance!
theres nothing thats bad about living in asutralia!
and of course americans can move here and become a citizen. |

belinda's full of it .. sorry to say ...
SURE we have some of the world's most toxic critters living here... BUT when you actually take into consideration that SO FEW PEOPLE actually get bitten, or eaten or whatever it was Belinda was trying to convince you of ... your chances of survival are pretty bloody high......
You have more chances of coming to harm in a car crash ( as you would in America) than being harmed by our fauna
AND we also DON'T have any animals like Lions, tigers, Bears(OH MY) and wolves....
BUT YOU GOTTA WATCH THE DROPBEARS ;)
Anyway I don't need to sell you on the country ... as most others have done a good job ... BUT i would really recommend that before you try to become a citizen .. that you actually visit first ... see WHAT YOU THINK ... AND NOT WHAT WE TELL YOU .. then make your decision. |

I love Australia....because we are laid back....we have great weather......we have a warped sense of humour that the rest of the world doesn't always get......we are friendly.....we dont have too many problems....such as wars, health care, wellfare, over population, we have a unique way of life, and beautiful scenery, we dont take ourselves too seriously, but we excell in most everything we do, we have a great economy, mineral rich resources, great beaches, diverse scenery.......the list goes on an on : ) |

I love living in Aus, you feel safer at night, theres no drivebys, or school shootings Not much Crime, i hate our current prime minister Kevin Rudd, I am sure you can become a citizen if you have a lot of money or pass the emigration test (which i hear is actually quite hard) All in All Australia is a lovely place to live and all the towns are great and a lot better health care system than america have i have only ever seen 1 homeless person and that was in melbourne |

Australia has so much to offer.
Don't be scared off by sharks, spiders and snakes the people, weather and lifestyle make up for them.
The only things that might hinder your decision is that you would be a long way from home and Christmas is realy hot (we're used to it, but lots of folks who move down here find that a little strange - but heck, Santa still wears the wooly red suit and fur lined boots when he comes to visit so if he can cope so can you!!)
So, what are you waiting for, come on down!
Happy travels |

I have spent 3 months travelling around the US, a month in Canada and a few months travelling in Europe so I think I have a pretty good idea of what life is like for people in different western countries. While I think life can be very good for wealthy people anywhere, I think for average people on average incomes, nowhere is better than Australia. Canada comes a close second (climate can be harsh). Australians generally have a good standard of living AND a good lifestyle. We have a booming economy, low unemployment, a 38 hour working week, minimum 4-5 weeks holiday a year, minimum adult wage of around $15-$16, and a very good (most of the time) health care system.
We don't have the poverty that one sees in the US. We have much less pollution in the air than the US (there is only 21 million people here and we don't all drive big cars). Very few people here have guns and that area is highly regulated. Australians are much less religious than Americans and the 'religious right' doesn't have the power that it does in America. The food here is better quality generally (more of an emphasis on fresh quality produce) although we do have all the junk food the you guys seem to live on most of the time.
You can apply to move here but generally you will only be accepted if you are educated and have money (there is a points system). If you work in an area where there is a current shortage in Australia (eg. nursing, mining industry amongst others) you will be welcomed with open arms.
Americans I know who live here love it but they do miss things like their favourite sports (gridiron, basketball and baseball aren't that popular here), some brands of processed foods that they can't get here and things like Halloween and Thanksgiving which are not celebrated here.
These are the things they have sacrificed in order to live the Australian lifestyle (and they don't regret it).
So what are you waiting for??!! |
|

But Why??
 |
I'd love to go there someday. |

Dude, I've lived on the coast my entire life, and I've never even seen a shark or a jellyfish.
We have shark nets at the beaches..
But deadly iguanas? wth belinda?
I've never been hurt, bitten, or whatever by any wildlife in my entire life.
You would have a HUGELY higher chance of dying on the road tomorrow than being eaten by something in Australia
Adelaida has it pretty well down-pat,
apart from the brand selection.
I found when I went to the US, the shops had a lot less brand selection than I wouldve thought.
And our Government doesn't try and protect our brands, the American ones that aren't here at the moment just don't want to invest in us (Hersheys etc). You will find most major american brands though
About the citizenship, it should take you 4 years of living in Australia to become a citizen. |

Hi, I live in Brisbane (Queensland). Life in Oz is pretty cool. Unemployment is at an all time low and there are plenty of jobs. We aren't that much different to the USA, from what I"ve seen on TV. Except you guys drive on the wrong side of the road. Here in Brisbane we have great weather (today was about 28c but it can sometimes go up to 35c or higher, but not very often. Traffic is a problem, our roads infrastructure is about 15 years behind what it should be, but they are working hard to catch up on that. At the moment we get US$0.88 for our dollar. Petrol (gas) is about $A1.30 per litre Dearer in the southern states, (the Queensland state gov subsidizes fuel 8c per litre. We have lots of shopping centres, malls, cinemas, theme parks etc. We had elections last November and the old government (federal) was voted out after 11 years in office.
Yes we have MacDonald's, KFC and Hungry Jacks (I think that is a rip off of Burger King, and Pizza Hut. We have a fairly ordinary public transport system as far as trains go, but our buses are pretty good, modern and air conditioned. If that should give you something to think about. You are welcome to contact me if you would like to know more. |
