What's the best Australian city to live in?

Personal opinion:
Forget about Sydney, the cost of living there is just way too high, and try to buy a house there, you might not get any good deal.
People tend to be 'colder', but the weather is rather warm. Compare to Massachusetts, Sydney might be 'tropical' all year round. Even in the winter, it still gets up to 65 degree in the day time, although it might drop to 45 at night. Summer: hot hot hot. But if you like warmer weather for a change, Sydney or Brisbane is the way to go.

I think Melbourne is a good place to live. The weather is generally cooler, and it still has a very nice atmosphere, people are friendly, lots of activities.

Hey, how about Brisbane!!!. It is definitely not a country town anymore as some suggested. It is the 3rd largest cities in Australia. Enough people to make it festive. Not too crowded to squeeze you breathless during peak hours. Lots of hip suburbs (sometimes better than the city itself). And if you choose the right place, you can have a nice river view right from your apartment! Brisbane really has integrated the river into their daily activities. Hard to explain, but it is awesome!

PERTH, its great here, the beaches are beautiful and the weathers great most of the year and there is so much to do!!! That is other than the "nitelife" , but other than that its terrific!!! Rock on Perth

I lived in Australia. The cities are good like Sydney and Perth is great. BUT, you cannot just decide to go live in Australia and think they will welcome you with open arms because after your tourism time is up; you will have to leave or become and illegal alien.

Other countries do not want immigrants the same as the US doesn't want them. Sorry but you are not in reality here.

I was able to live there because my husband owned a company in Australia.

bugger the cities - go to the towns

if you want city - I would strongly suggest CANBERRA the Capital of Australia. Known as the ACT - Canberra is a very nice place to live and people to meet plenty of things to do, its not quite your busy city - its like a big country town

try some towns - cities are too busy, too polluted, too many traffic jams, need I say more - plus plenty of them are running out of drinking water - not enough rain!!!

towns like - Townsville, Rockhampton, Broome, Mildura, go country - but if you like the hustle and bustle go to the city

To start with, what skills do you have? Are you a doctor, builder, engineer or someone else with great quals? Do you work for a large company? If not, then the likelyhood of you even being considered for a visa are slim to nil.

In regards to cities, you dont say what you enjoy doing whether it is eating out, clubbing, siteseeing, nature or anything else.

Without being specific, its really hard to judge, and as tentofield said, we are all pretty biased about our cities.

I prefer Melbourne, and have lived all over the country for considerable amounts of time.

Melbourne has everything, culture, food, cafes, sport, major events, concerts, museums, anything you could really want, and unlike Sydney, its all based in the city.

In Sydney (again this is my opinion) you only have the harbour. They city ist that great, besides circular quay and darling harbour, its a hell of a lot more expensive, rent food etc.

Perth is lovely, I would live there, but its too expensive to get backwards and forwards to the east coast. Adelaide is nice. pretty quiet, lots to do though, Darwin is where you go to drink and Brisbane is growing everyday.

Tasmania is a different kettle of fish, I grew up there, and would NEVER move back as it has not moved forward at all.

I live in Newcastle, but I don't think it's the best city. You should really find what's best for you, find what sort of activities you are interested in, but I think Sydney's the best place (the good parts of Sydney anyway).

It depends on what you want
Melbourne - culture, lifestyle, groovy factor
Canberra - great for families, public service jobs small city
Sydney - busy cosmopolitan for the elite professionals. great beaches
Brisbane - more laid back. a city but country town atmosphere. close to beaches (1 hr drive)
Darwin - country town feel. Very humid in the wet season. Large indigenous communties
Perth - Like Canberra with a beach
Adelaide - Like Brisbane
Hobart - Like an old english country town

Every reply you get will be biased, all the major cities are good to live in. My personal choice is Sydney and I have lived in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Darwin and visited all the others many times. I have always had a great time wherever I am but if I had to settle for one, it would be Sydney..
