What's the best way to travel from Adelaide to Melbourne?

Flying is definitely the fastest -and often cheapest- way to travel, especially if you consider Virginblue and Jetstar often have fantastic deals in a bid to outdo each other with cheap rates.

But, if you've seen the inside of an airplane from one city to another then there's really nothing new to be gained from flying. Unless you are in a hurry, of course.

If you have the time, I recommend driving the Great Ocean Road. You can also stop at some other great little places along the way, such as Mt Gambier and the Twelve Apostles. And if you don't blink, there's the dubious and very shady "Cheeseworld" that is attached to the Kraft factory at the start of the Great Ocean Road journey.

If you do travel the Great Ocean Road, try and stop over at Lorne (or at worst, Apollo Bay) for the night. Lorne is one of the prettiest little seaside towns along that stretch and is really worth the stop over.

That said, if you are travelling over the Christmas/New Year break, you might find the road congested and Lorne backed-up with traffic. There is a big music festival at Lorne every New Years Eve and thousands upon thousands of people head on down each year. In fact, it got so big they had to open a second venue in Tasmania to try and cater for the hordes.

If you do decide to drive -or bus- then what ever you do, don't forget the camera! The stretch from Apollo Bay to Geelong is by far the most scenic too. You might want to take a book or magazine for the first part though, that low coastal shrubbery with no ocean view can get a bit boring to look at.

Best way would be to drive. The Great Ocean Road is magnificent. You won't see it by plane or rail so other than a car catch a bus.

The cheapest way to travel would be to steal a car and drive away without paying from every petrol station you fill up at. Seriously the cheapest way would be to drive, the next cheapest would be to take a bus and then to fly. The best way to travel would be to take Jetstar as they are the cheapest and have leather seats.

best way? or cheapest way? I've done the whole train thing..it was ok (but i had me a first class birth so...). Definitely prefer flying Virgin, cheap and quick...like my ex boyfriend...oooh dis!

i've never driven and it's definitely something i've gotta do at least once because you know you gotta see the scenery...and geelong. But if you've driven that route before i doubt it's one of those things that you have to do at least twice in your life. so i guess the question is, what's your aim? (as in motivation?) are you a backpacker on a budget or a family or a business person with cash to spare? One way i would definitely not suggest is bus...it's not all that cheap and it takes a good solid twelve hours and is probably the most uncomfortable thing...ever. So train, or plane. I'd go with plane. Or hitch a ride on the back of a chicken truck.

Fly, takes only an hour. Drive takes 8-9 hours.

Depends on what u like and how much you want to spend? Plane is the quickest and almost the cheapest nowadays, Rail is longer and more expensive with a sleeper, driving takes even longer and with the price of fuel not that cheap, so if you have the time and want to see some dead roo's on the road, drive. If you want to get there quick fly, the bus would be the worst, full of dero's coughing and sneezing, crying babies, cant stop when u want. I would fly and get it over and done with and then stay in Melb. its heaps better than boring Adelaide. Have fun!

By Plane is the best ever and it doesn't take 3 or 4 hours it take 2 hours. Bus, Rail and overnight it takes long time.

bus takes about 12 hours, and it the cheapest, but not all that comfortable,
by rail, it leaves adelaide in the morning, and costs about $90 one way, it gets to melbourne about 7 pm.more comfortable than the bus.
flying takes 90 mins and the cost vary starting at about $50 with discounts and special offers going around, just be aware that sometimes its arrival airport is avalon, and that is a long way from melbourne itself.the airport that is closest to melbourne, is tullamarine.
