Australia established a new capital in the 1920s due to rivallry between Sydney and Melbourne as to which should be the capital of Australia. |

It definately is Canberra.
Canberra became the capital of Australia when Sydney and Melbourne both made a claim to try and be the capital city. Neither could agree on who should be allowed to be the capital city, so Canberra, which is located between the two of them, became the capital of Australia. |

Canberra. It was an entirely new city laid out by a Chicago based architect , Walter Burley Griffin and his wife Marion after they won a design competition. Work started before the First World War but the war delayed it. The idea probably came from Washington in the USA where it's likely Boston. New York and Philadelphia all wanted to the the new capital of the USA in about 1780.
When Australia became a Federation in 1900 the agreement was that the capital should not be either Sydney or Melbourne, but had to be a new city at least 100 miles from either. But until about 1927 most of the Federal Government was from Melbourne as it was the biggest and most prosperous city in Australia at the time.
The first British settlement in Australia was at Sydney in 1788 so it was the "capital" until the colony of Victoria was separated in 1851 and it's capital became Melbourne.
Sydney is only the capital city of the State of New South Wales. |

The answer is Canberra. This city was chosen because they couldn't decide wheter or not to have Sydney or Melbourne as the capital. But Sydney is the capital of New South Wales. |
