It is great in the dry season. In the wet season it is hot and humid and rains most days. Roads are flooded and some areas are inaccessible. There are also tropical cyclones occasionally in the wet season. I love it up there and have been many times but it is not always perfect and the wet season can be very trying. |

I have lived in cooktown, townsville, ayr, the torres straits, lockhart river
I loved it as a kid becuase you were free of the restictions and cares of the big smoke but now now where is safe not even those little communities i grew up in where i wandered with my friends to all hours with my friends beign 7 and 8 without care or harrasment.
Generally speaking i still love the area but certainly not for the totally carefree lifestyle there once was, dont get me wrong it is still more carefree and friendly than the city, more for the picturesque scenery the fishing the atmosphere.

i'm originally from up there (born in Mackay), have family in weipa, mackay, cairns, etc etc.
i live in west australia now.
everytime i go back there for a holiday, there's a bit of a rednecky type thing going on there. sorry, this is probably going to score me some thumbs down and i am generalising a bit, but i am speaking from experience.
dunno, perhaps it's just my family, but people up there don't seem to be very 'accepting' of different races/cultures that they aren't already familiar to. |
