In Queensland you have to be at least 16½ years of age to get your learners license.

The state NT is younger I believe - you will have to check each state for age depending on where you are going.

All rules are changing 1st July - alot more complex.

if you are planning on renting a car - then be aware you have to be at least 25 yrs, use your credit card & may need to produce an international licence.
also i hope you can speak and read english if you intend to take driving lessons
new driving rules take effect july 1st & young drivers (16&over) have heavy restrictions. each state has different rules - so check with each dept. of transport in your state

In Melbourne you can get a learners permit at the age of 16 and your provisional licence to drive at 18.
Motor bike licence at 18

You get your learner permit at 16, which means that you have to have a fully licenced driver with you at all times. You get your Probationary licence at 18 which means that you can drive by yourself, without any alcolhol in your system. then three years later you can become fully licenced. That is in victoria, but some states change.

It varies from state to state, but in Melbourne, you can get your learners at 16 and your provisional licence at 18. You have to be on your "P" plates for 2 years before you become a fully fledged driver.

G'day,

You can start taking lessons and get your Learner's permit at 16 in Melbourne (Victoria).

Hope this helps. Welcome to Melbourne

L PLATES AT 16
P PLATES AT 18

SO NOT ON YOUR OWN TILL 18

I was about to say exactly what mariemlm said!! If you're gonna rent, you need to be 25. The only way around that is to go into a travel agent & they can get car hire for people between 21-25. If you're a AAA member, you can pay a surcharge to drive...
Depending on what state you're in, the laws are all different... In Victoria, you can start learning at 16, get your P plates at 18 & full licence at 21.

The Rhino
In South Australia its:

L =16 years old
P = 16 1/2

Most places(like thrifty, avis, or budget) will rent to you if you are 21-25, you just have to pay more than the 25+ people. Some places will even rent to you if you are 18-20 but they tend to be less reputable.

JayKay
in the NT you can get your L's at 15 and 9 months and then your P's at 16 you have your P's for a year and then your one your open license
