What are Americans to Australians?

What do Australians think of Americans? Do they (or you) like the "American" accent, or despise it? Do they (or you)like american tourists or Americans that move there? I am asking because I (bieng born American) desperately want to go there, maybe to live...

Just do not ask/talk to them about kangaroos. They hate poor beasts, I do not know why (kangaroos are so interesting), and can even beat you up if you do!

I'm an American who's migrated to Australia and love it. Yes most Aussies like us and our accents too. We do get a bad rap when they see obese loud arrogant rude opinionated American tourist come here just as every other country does. What you will notice when you get here is Aussie people here are all friendly nice laid back open minded and easy going. Even all the old people here are really outgoing. What you will discover nobody labels each other, people here aren't morally or materialistic twisted or puritans. like they are in the US. You'll blend in very easy and make a lot of new "MATES" friends in no time. Don't ever get offended by being called a Seppo it's Aussie slang for "Yanks" heres a list of OZ slang.

You'll pick it up in no time come on down you'll love it here you will never want to go back to the states once you've been.

As an Aussie, I can only speak for myself and not the whole country.

I choose to be friends with people because of who they are and I don't care where they were born.
There are many Aussies I wouldn't want to spend time with.

As was said above, arrogant and bombastic people are just not my cup of tea either, it doesn't matter where they're from.

Come on over and try us out, we really are a pretty decent bunch of people.

That's an odd question, I mean everyone has different opinions right? Overall all we're a pretty relaxed people so it's not like we're going to hate you on sight just for the country of your birth. Accents and such aren't that big an issue, there are so many different nationalities and cultures in the cities that no one bats an eyelid. You'd be a source of curiousity in a small town, but that's about it. No worries hun, just come on down and see for yourself. Hope you love it as much as we do :)

Agreeing with the above answer - everyone is different and couldn't ever judge a whole nation of people on only the ones we've come across. Don't think anyone would particularly care about the accent? Hear it all day every day on TV, and so muliticultural here that no one would notice/care. Some American tourists (not necessarily my own viewpoint!) - have given their nationality a reputation for being unnecessarily LOUD and in need of a chill pill......but as I say, that's only some people's view point, and if you're coming here to live, you wouldn't be a tourist. Just don't ask any dumb questions about kangaroos. You should definitely put Australia on your list of places to visit and perhaps to move - it's gorgeous here and you'll find the people generally relaxed and welcoming. You'll like it! Enjoy.

G'day as an Aussie I can tell you what I think about Americans in general I like them as long as they don't try and big note them selves just because they are Americans. That is arrogant and I don't like arrogant people. As for your accent please tell me you are from the south I love the southern accent especially from women I could sit there and listen to you talk all day.

If you are planning on coming here do some research first, I once was on a tram in Melbourne and I heard this comment from an American couple in their 60's "oh look honey they have Safeway here" the whole tram went in to shock at how ill informed these people were. All you have to do when you are here is remember not to act arrogant or ignorant and you will be fine but we are a straight to the point type of people so be prepared for someone to tell you when they have been offended

Now as for moving here what type of job do you do our immigration is harder than some people think if you a medical professional and willing to work in a bigger rural town it will be how soon can you get on a plane but if you are a cab driver it will be we have enough of them sorry. But have a look at Australia first a lot of English come out here and go back its a long way to come if you don't like it

hope this has helped

I like the American accent but don't like the ignorance towards us like the obsession with our kangaroos and koalas. It's a big place with variety just like the US.

Marnie_Australia
I can't speak on behalf of all Australians, but using myself and my friends, I can give you the following information:
* I like the American accent, but I know a lot of people find it annoying because it sounds nasal.
* As with any race, there are some Americans that I find great, and other Americans that I totally despise. It depends more on the personality/politeness of the individual. If you are friendly and nice and kind most Australians will like you.

AZ
Jesus H. Christ man! Not terribly welcoming eh?

When asking about what another country thinks of your nationality because you want to visit their country and experience how cool it is, when they mostly reply "don't be arrogant or stuck up when you're here" there's pretty much your answer as to what they think of you. The Seppo comment is icing on the cake.

I would think that most countries would be delighted to have someone take interest in visiting their country and taking in the sights and sounds, unless you're American I guess. Let other people from other countries be their tourists. I'm sure they'd appreciate them much more.

Still, I'd say, at least some time in your life, go to Australia, at least if for no one else, then yourself. Even if you are judged because of your nationality, at least it's better than never going at all and spending the rest of your life wondering what could have been.

But Why??
I like Americans, they taste like chicken.

Personally, I am an Aussie, and I judge people on their character, not their nationality.
I think some American tourists have given the USA a reputation for being loud and obnoxious but Aussies are fairly laidback and happy to talk to you.

It depends on you. The kind of Americans we don't like don't usually stay long anyway.

Ghan
I don't really care where you come from, since that generally doesn't determine what kind of person you'll be. I find some things that America does annoying, but I wouldn't hold it against any American I met. Sometimes the accent is annoying but it depends on where you're from, (it can also be awesome!) and again, accents aren't the kind of thing to stop me having a friendship with a great person.
I would say just be yourself and don't worry about what people might think because you're from America and you'll be fine! We're a pretty easy going bunch.

DollyMD
If you have a look at some of the other questions asked here, I would have to say that they are people that have a fixation about Kangaroos! (like ny, LOL!)

i think they're okay but i know a lot of people to find them arrogant.. and the accent to make them automatically sound stupid (thanks to tv) so i dunno. it depends on the person and place :S

As a race I feel the Americans are very arrogant...you seem to think you are the best at everything.

Australians are cool. I been there 3 times. I worked there for 3 summers as well up in Surfers Paradise. You can get a work visa at bunac.org you have to be 18 to 30. If older go to New Zealand its good there to.
