yeah we're laid back mate, men & women go topless on the beach, we give directions if asked. we work hard & have a long history of unionism though not strong at the moment.
we love our beaches & our bush. we respect people who speak their mind, if it's fair.
we are not an overtly religious country. we tend to dislike over-spoken or "wanker" types.
we pride ourselves on our "mateship" - being there for friends & being friends with other aussies.
we're not what you would call "suspicious types" we're pretty trusting but not easy to fool.
we do have a long history of racism, though we are a multicultural society & get along pretty well nowadays. but we have a shameful history in our past treatment of the australian aboriginal people. which many australians to this day deny, our government on behalf of the australian people has only just this year apologised for past atrocities & injustices we inflicted upon them. they are a noble & ancient people, the most ancient rock art in the world is thought to be aboriginal.
but yeah we have rednecks, not so much in the cities.
we have a real beer drinking culture (but i don't drink), & going out to see ya mates is usually at the pub (public bar).
we're sick of our politicians no one trust's them. our politics is left leaning a bit. we have a lot of socialist concepts i agree with, free universal health care, public transport, unemployment support,a public housing system, public education, etc.
well i'm running out here.
sydney is australia's most expensive city (the gateway city) melbourne (pronounced mel- bun) is next. but all the major cities have seen house, rent & now food price increases that have been a sudden jump.
melbourne is the next similar city wise & next largest & popular. but it is further south so is colder (a lot more than sydney in winter) then next brisbane or perth, then adelaide, then hobart.
but it depends on what temperature you like to i reckon australia reaches from down near antarctic waters to near the equator. darwin can be 31 degrees celsius in winter while hobart might be -5 degree celsius.
hope this helps |

Nothin wrong with us Aussie's, yeah we do have a bit of a different lingo and most people will help you understand it and we're not too offensive, not racist and are pretty laid back.
Sydney isn't the only place in OZ to visit, come to the Gold Coast QLD and you will have a ball(great time).
Heaps of people all having the best time going to the beach and clubbin' hard in the night :)
Australia has alot, from dessert, snow, rain forrest, beach's and everything the rest of the world has to offer.
And to Paul M, no we aren't cocky and arrogant, we only come across like that to people who dis-respect us, so stick that where the the sun don't shine mate..... lol
Ps: We love our beer, that would be the common theme here :)
Pps: We do have the occasional yobbo (wanker) here but no more than other countries.
Edit: Well said Rej..... |

australians are like any other culture. nice people overall (always going to be a few bad eggs) most are pretty outgoing and relaxed. sydney is the most expensive city in Australia. The closest thing to sydney is melbourne (slightly less expensive but not by much)
Brisbane is also similiar but less tourist-y
Adelaide is smaller city to the south which i have never travelled to and Perth is a beautiful little city (also the most isolated city in the world) with great beaches and wineries (although im a bit biased as i live in Perth) |

The same as most places, you get your good with your bad.. No where is perfect.
Typically we're a laid back culture, but at the same time hardworking and dedicated, we like a good work/life balance.
Your have assertive personalities and timid personalities, you have nice people, you have complete a*holes.
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, etc, all the capital cities are expensive but by comparison to overseas countries quite affordable. If you want less expensive try the regional cities, such as the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong, Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong, etc..
People in regional cities tend to be less stressed out also, and therefore more relaxed and friendly. But even that is a massive generalisation. You can't do that to a country, we are all different people and should be taken one at a time. |

Easy going , tolerant & not afraid of hard work ! Sydney is probably the most expensive place to live & has a far faster pace of life than other capitals.
Once you get out of any major city you will meet a different type of Aussie & get a real picture & feel for the country. |

i heard from people that have visited there they are nice people and they will welcome you into there country. just don't use the peace sign because that is like a curse word or something like that. well i know that they get very offended by it.
they speak englis but they shorten the words and add a long vowel sound at the end.
for example barebecue is barbie; biscuit is bikkie; biker is bikie; brisane is brizzie; austrilian si aussie; breakfast is brekkie. |

Hey
i live in Perth Australia
Most people are alright, it depends, you can get people which are rude and dirty, or you can get people who are neat and friendsly, most people are friendly, its just once and a while when yo meat someone violent or snobby, but mostly in the neighbourhoods people are friendly and mostly in the city,This is the same with Melbourne and Sydney, but it tends to get more rich there. perth is getting quite pricy now

its very expensive to live in Sydney, because its overpopulated, and the same with melbourne (b/c its the only place that's not all dessert)
and aussies are hard workers, and very sarcastic...
but they are def not racist, but they might poke at you for being an american |

Aussies are complex. They suffer from Tall Poppy Syndrome and do not like it when others are successful. They can be very sarcastic, frugal, sloppy and be really mean to people of other countries. They are also very parochial. Oh and there seems to be alot of feral people. Having said that, Aussies like to relax and travel alot. They also like water sports and going for picnics to drink beer. |

Why ask?
The majority of answers will be coming from Australians, and every country thinks their the best and most nicest people in a way so you wont get a truthful answer here....Only way to get a true answer is by living there... |
