As a general rule, rent is fairly expensive in Sydney. For a new unit or house, depending on the location, you'de be looking at $300 through to $600 per week. The rental prices in Sydney has just increased following the increase of local interest rates by 0.25%. For family friendly suburbs i would recommend moving away from the city slightly. Be careful not to move towards the South Western parts of Sydney, such as Bankstown, Lakemba, Punchbowl because they are highly populated by Ethnic citizens. The problem being that there is a very high level of violence, theft, alcohol abuse etc. The Sutherland Shire is a great family area, with large amounts of rental properties. They also have great access to local schools, play facilities, hospitals etc. Look at places such as Oyster Bay, Jannali, Kareela, Como, Miranda, Gymea, Grays Point, Woolooware, Caringbah, Cronulla. All great places with good facilities & are also on a very reliable train line for easy public transport.

There are many family friendly suburbs. The eastern suburbs are great - Maroubra, Randwick, Coogee, Bondi, Dover Heights, Centennial Park, Woolahra, Vaucluse, Rose Bay, Double Bay etc etc. Prices vary enormously. The northern suburbs - North Sydney, Mosman, Crows Nest, Northbridge, etc or the northern beaches - Manly, Narrabeen, Dee Why, Avalon etc. Northwest through the Hills district to Windsor and Richmond are popular but there is very poor public transport up there. In the west, Strathfield to Parramatta and on to Liverpool tend to be cheaper than the suburbs closer to the sea but there are many families choosing to live there. Further west still there are many suburbs with new ones appearing all the time from Penrith down to Campbelltown. These are the cheapest parts of Sydney but they are a long way from the city.

If you want to go a little further out, the Blue Mountains and the central coast have much to offer but you would not want to commute to the city every day for work although some people do.

The inner suburbs Wooloomooloo, Kings Cross, Paddington, Surry Hills, East Sydney, Ultimo, Newtown, Glebe, Balmain etc are great if you like nightlife, dining out, a cosmopolitan atmosphere etc. The are friendly but I would not describe them as family friendly.

that area, where you see a clear view of the blue mountains- especially Kurrajong

I think north west is a good choice, it's still quiet enough and most of it is affordable enough.

Sydney's suburbs seam to be divided upon interest lines.
Northern beaches surfing /beach life. eastern suburbs are expensive fashionable places. Inner west Bohemian ambiance. All these place are family friendly with good schools. there are plenty of suburbs further away from the city that are new I don't know what they are like.
Parramatta has the highest birth rate and lots of young families.
Visit local council websites and you can see statistical profiles including average income, religion,etc and whats other services operate in these areas

Sydney is an awesome city dont listen to what the jealous people from Melbourne say! I would reccomend the North Shore/ Northern Beaches for family friendly life or the Eastern Suburbs which is faily friendly and close to the city. Can recommend Crows Nest - not aware of current rental rates for flats or houses. Suggest you search on line - rental accommodation Sydney Australia.

You could even view the classified ads on-line - the Sydney Morning Herald etc.
