What are some things that make Victoria Australia a great place to live?

I am intrigued with Victoria Australia, but know very little about it. I'd like to hear from people who live there....what are some of the top reasons someone from the United States would move to Victoria. Thank you.

George, that's cool! I LOVE Boston, was visiting there in July. Thanks!

I am told Melbourne in Victoria is a lot like Boston in the US.

Victoria is the best state in Australia and Melbourne is the best city. It has lots of attractions like the Great Ocean Road, Old Melbourne Gaol and many other things. The person who said victoria sucks needs to be reported for abuse! He is probably just some lonely person in NSW wishing he could move to Victoria but he's got to get a job first

I live in Melbourne and from what I can see it's a great place to live. It's got a really lovely atmosphere and is a big cultural centre in Australia. We've got art galleries, theatres, heaps of music venues and many historic sites. There are many parks within the city and I believe was voted one of the most liveable cities in the world a few years back.

Everything Mozzie says is exactly right. I live in Melbourne and think it is fantastic.

Firstly our weather is great - no tropical storms, cyclones or earthquakes and not too hot or cold. It never snows in Melbourne although you can drive to the snow within a couple of hours. And in Summer it's not at all humid so the wether is quite mild. The only problem is that it doesn't rain enough so we are a bit short of water and have to watch how much we use. That being said, our water quality is fantastic and deffinately my favourite water to drink of anywhere I've ever travelled.

Secondly, like Mozzie said we are very multi-cultural and that is part of our identity and what makes us Australian. European settlement in Australia only started about 200 years ago, and most of the population emmigrated within the past 80 years so most people come from somewhere else or their parents or grandparents did. Melbourne particularly has large Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Italian, and Russian communities.

Living conditions in Melbourne are also very good. We have free health-care (unlike America), free education, reasonably low unemployment, and our minimum wage is more than twice the American minimum wages. We also have a lot of space so in the suburbs most people have gardens and our roads are wide and all have nature strips.

We are a large city which means that we have access to all the best resourses and services including specialist hospitals and large shopping centres. However, Melbourne is small enough that it doesn't feel too busy or crowded.

Melburnians are very friendly and helpful. I have recently had to walk with a frame and in Melbourne people are constantly getting out of my way and helping me to reach things in shops. On a holiday to Sydney I discovered that no-one seemed to notice my walking frame and I was constantly getting stuck in shop aisles when people would stop in front of me and not realise that I wasn't able to get passed them. That never happens to me in Melbourne.

Melbourne is also within driving distance of many beautiful holiday places. Along the coast we have many stunning beaches, in-land we have beautiful bushland with unique Australian wildlife, and we also have farms and small country towns which are quaint and pretty places to holiday.

All up I'd say the ambiance here makes it one of the most liveable cities in the world. My family has hosted ('homestay exchange-students') many visitors from overseas and many of them have come back again with their families to show them.

If I had any criticism it would only be that we are so far away from most other countries which is a problem if you don't like flying. And Australia is a BIG country so if I wanted to drive to Western Australia it would take at least 4 days, mostly through empty deserts; and even our closest cities - Sydney and Adelaide are about 10 hours drive away (one hour flying).

But within Victoria there are SO MANY places to go that even if you can't fly you can see a big mix of things. If you ever come here you should drive to Phillip Island (less than 2 hours from Melb) where you can see Little Penguins and visit a wild-life park where you can hand-feed wallabys and kangaroos. Being an island it also has beautiful beaches including the Nobbies which is a costal lookout where you can see seals. Although Phillip Island has heaps of tourist attractions it is not at all commercialised so it has a wonderful relaxing holiday atmosphere.

Sorry I went on so long, I hope my answer is helpful! lol! Enjoy!

Melbourne is more like Seattle without trams.

I've been to all three places and Melbourne is more like Seattle than Boston.

Melbourne is getting more spread out.

Look to regional areas too, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat etc.

l don't know why people are intrigued by us, but l love that we have so many beautiful things to see and do here, as the great beaches , the Ottways (rainforests) are amazing , the 12 apostles & great ocean road, we have waterfalls, great parklands, Grampians. old mining towns and also great clubs musuems and culture, the people are pretty easygoing--- most of them anyway. Its one of the cleanest states. Well l guess we have everything and are pretty lucky.

1st of all, the water is delicious...I mean I've been to Europe and hated the water, I was constantly ill from not being able to consume the water, so to me our water quality is very important. Another thing I'd like to point out is, don't expect to come to the city of Melbourne imagining Paul Hogan, Jennifer Hawkins, Naiomi Watts type of people to be the majority... certainly we have blonde blue eyed Australians aplenty....but it bothers me when I see tourists who get annoyed on our trams because they have these pre-conceived ideas of what the population of Melbourne should appear like...the face of Melbourne is very Multi-cultural so if you cant handle seeing international students all over the CBD, and all of us Melburnites packed like sardines into trams, then you are probably going to be grumpy about moving directly to the centre of Melbourne. That being said, I'm so proud to be a Melburnite Victorian...I love every corner of every footpath, let alone the official touristic attractions. You either dig it or you dont....I've been to Sydney, it's beautiful, but the people are not my cup of tea....they are much more segregated and there does not seem to be town planning, it just seems so disorganised....you get lost even with a map. The great thing about Melbourne is it is set on a grid pattern so all main roads lead to the city centre (VERY HARD TO GET LOST). We have excellent schools, and leisure centres and 1 of my favourite icons, The State Library....how am I going to describe the immensity of this beautifuL place? I've already babbled on. We have a very cosmopolitan open-minded society....everyone is free to be their self and practice their customs (Chinese Moon Festival, St. Patricks Day, Oktoberfest, Italian Lygon St. Festa, Spanish/Alternative Fitzroy Festa, Ramadan Festa, Carols By Candle Light & Christmas, Arts Festivals, Gay & Lesbian Pride etc; etc;) We are the festival capital of Australia...I guess this is because we love to express ourselves and share....and so a true Melburnite's nature is warm, hospitable, larrikin, inquisitive and about mateship, as is defined by what constitutes an Australian.

We have a gazillion type of cafe's and ofcourse a culture which reflects that. We love enjoying our environment and coexisting with differing influences...it is so evident in our unique Melbourne flavours... from our fine dining to our expression of Art....Melbourne is ever-evolving and it glitters like the stars at night. We'd be happy to Welcome another addition :)
