If you want to know which are the most popular sports in Australia, don't listen to those other guys. The most popular games to watch here on TV or Live are
1) Australian Rules Football
2)Cricket
3) Rugby League
But the games or sports most people participate in or play here are
1) Real Football(Soccer)
2) Netball
3) Fishing

Rugby league here is only really played in two states and by less and less kids,Soccer is kicking its BUTT!
Cricket, really, not many play that,to bloody hot.Kids rather surf.

why do you keep asking this question?

Jim
Depends on where you go. Melbourne is AFL and Sydney is NRL. But overall....

AFL (Aussie rules) - Every city has a team and Melbourne is obsessed with the sport.

Rugby League - Played in NSW with few other cities with teams too. It doesn't get much publicity, and people don't talk about it much, but in terms of attendances I would put this above cricket (just!)

Cricket - they have state teams. Everyone gets into the this when tests/One dayer are on.

They also have Rugby union (super 14 and state of origin) which are popular. Basketball seems to be on telly a fair bit, but nobody talks about it. Soccer is very much up and coming, the A league is only a few years old, but its in the media a lot.

Any major world sporting competition with an Australian team will get a lot of attention, but only if/when Australia reach the quarter finals (or equivalent).

I think the most popular sport in australia is cricket. I'm from hungary btw.

Patricia H
I don't live in Australia but I have read that the most popular sport is Rugby, followed by Cricket and then Golf. Rugby has 3 existing divisions: Rugby Union, Australian Rules and Rugby League. It has great importance to the Australian for some reason.
