Shop for basics like bulk flour, toilet paper and the like at Aldi. Buy fruit and veg at big fruit and veg stores, rather than supermarkets (and buy only what's in season!). Meat - either buy reduced from the supermarket (end of the day) - it is fine if you freeze straight away. Otherwise, keep your eye on specials in your area's local free paper - local shops advetise in these all the time.

I dont live in Brisbane (I'm a Melbourne gal) but here are my tips:
- If you're supermarket shopping always buy the catalogue specials and shop later at night when they often "reduce to clear" produce/meat/bread, etc
- Buy in BULK - if there's any markets nearby ALWAYS check them out to see if there any good and buy up in bulk as its cheaper.
- Plan ahead on your meals. I do so a month at a time. Each night of the week, is given a specific meat day. For instance, Mondays: chicken, Tuesdays: ground beef, ect. Add rice, vegetables, pasta or potatoes for the side dishes.

If you can get a group of friends together why not do a weekly run to the Brisbane Markets and buy your fruit and vege directly from the wholesaler. Wednesday the markets are open to the public. There's a small admission fee but if you can get about 9 or 20 fmailies involved each paying between $20 and $30 you'll have the freshest fruit at much lower price. The downsdie is somebody has to go and collect and divvy up but if you have time it is an excellent way top save.

Also if you have an ABN (or a friend) you can buy from Campbells Cash and Carry. Bulk quanities that you can also split amongst friends to save.

Pattons at Underwood has very cheap meat and there's a reasonable fruit and vege place there as well.

Failing that, plan out your weeks meals in advance and make use of leftovers as much as you can.

Eg we have a roast chook one night, and then use the bones to make a stock and any left over chicken to pop into a risoto for the following night... Same goes for any roast really, left over meat can be used in stir fries or fried rice or minced down to put in rissoles.

We are all struggling at the moment it is hard to believe a box of cereal cost close to $8 and these kids seem to have hollow legs... I am trying to get back to basics too and am finding that menu planning is working for me.

Also, at various times in most stores food gets marked down consierably. I always pick up the green sticker items and freeze them for legitimate savings. I am that person lurking behind the lady with the price reduction sticker machine ; )

We buy fruit and Veg from local fruito - On the northside Farmer Pats at Rothwell are great or Coco's at Morayfield

At the big 2 Woolies and coles There is a short shelf life on fruit and Veg so they must mark down after a time - I guess you have to watch for the bargains.

Comparing prices with local butcher to supermarket helps too.

I also watch your local weekly community newspaper which has specials for food -

If you pick up the kids from school, the local mums and dads are usually handy for what places are great and at my school at least advice is happily shared - we are all having a go together. Great way to meet people too.

If we lived closer, the markets at Caboolture on a Sunday are fun and fruit and veg very moderate prices - huge range too! Redcliffe and Kipparing/ Have weekend makets too. net search would confirm times.

Look for the specials in your letter box and stock up a little on those items you often use. Aldi supermarket is the best if you can find one near you. They don't sell all items but have an excellent range and quite a saving on most items. Their fresh products are all Australian. Then there are the shop a dockets and also markets for fresh produce. www.shopadocket.com
