The Torres Straight Islanders are another indigenous people here, they naturally enough inhabit the Torres Straight Islands between Cape York and Papua New Guinea. Culturally the resemble the PNG peoples more then the Aboriginal nation of the rest of the country

The indigenous people of Australia (often referred to as aborigines) have lived on this continent for 42,000 years. In the south-eastern states, they are often referred to as Koori (rather than aborigine); as aborigine simply means "native" and can refer to any race indigenous to a country.

The other indigenous peoples of Australia (although not of mainland Australia) are the Tiwi Islanders and Torres Strait Islanders.

There were two different groups (for lack of a better word) of people living in Australia that we know of before it was "discovered" - the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. There was a lot of trade and intermarrying happening between the people of the Torres Strait and nearby coastal villages of PNG so are similar physically and culturally.
Now they are all lumped under the one umbrella as ATSI (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders) only for convenience's sake.

There are hundreds of different tribes in australia but here are a few. The largest is called the Pitjantjatjara people, another is the Arrernte people, the Luritja, the Warlpiri, the Ngunnawal, the Cammeraygal, the Eora, etc.....The word aborigines covers all native australians. Hope this helps.

"aborigine" just means essentially 'native' as in 'native to this country'. Its important to remember that there are many different nations of aborigine and torres strait islander people that make up those cultures that are indigenous to Australia. A bit in the same way there there is lots of different countries in europe - but they are all european.

There are lots of different nations of aboriginal Australians, but they are all Australian. And the have all been here a very very long time.

But it sounds like your report just wants you to write "torres strait islander".

Nobody else. The British used it as a penal colony, they sent prisoners there to serve their prison sentence, and most of them settled there, rather than to return to England.
