Yes, it is really frustrating how backward people think we are. I live near Sydney. One guy in a chat room asked me about smoking toads in the outback and getting high, truly.
Crocodile Dundee didn't do our reputation much good. I am sorry that was so popular as people think we are all like that.
To the person who said we are rude, as if? Our wicked sense of humour gets some people I think. You cant take yourself too seriously here, eh. |

I am from the USA and lived in Australia for 2 years. I am returning there to live permanently. My family jokes about certain things.. But I too have been asked very stupid questions by people. But.. I have been asked silly questions about the states by Australians who have never been there. I take it as any good Aussie would.. and tell them the Strewth.. ;) |

I have travelled to Cairnes, Brisbane and Sydney. But I travelled by air from one place to the next. All of the major roads were paved!
Australia is a huge place. It would be as tough to see the USA in one trip, as it would be to see all of Australia. We plan on going back to see more of it. We will again visit Sydney, but go to Melbourn and then trek over to see South Austrailia. We will go to Bendigo.
On our first trip, we went swimming on the Great Barrier Reef... That was COOL.
We travelled up to see the great farm lands in the foothills of the mountains along the east coast. We took train rides and went to Bar-B-Qs and visited zoos. Yes, we saw Kangaroos in the wild.
In Sydney, we looked at everything. It is a pretty city. |

Before I visited Australia: none of the 'impressions' you stated;
After I visited Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane: What A Beautiful Wonderful Country - I thought this is the model for those trying to build a new world.
So be like a wonderful Aussie and tell them "Amazing Australia" in the nicest way... no matter how stupid the question. Love you all Down Under. |

Sounds like you were talking to ignorant Americans.
I used to live in the Caribbean and people here asked if we lived in trees and huts.
Ignore it. |

lol, i'm living here now.
but when i moved to new zealand from south africa people would ask me things like
did you have a lion for a pet?
did tigers chase you? (tigers arent even on the sme continent!)
how come you not darker? lol
people just dont know much about a place and somehow believe the crazy sterotypes although most know steve irwin. before i got to australia i thought thats what i was gonna hear australians speak like. boy wasnt i relieved to find only steve was weird. |

Those are typical questions from uneducated americans who think the US is the only place in the world that is developed and civilized. Not that civilized having Bush as a president. Most americans get freaked out when they travel abroad and find that things are DIFFERENT from what they are used to.
Australia is a GREAT place, people are VERY FRIENDLY and open minded. |

Hey I have kangaroos living in my backyard and the bloke down the road had a drop bear (aka koala) land on his head 1 day and he (the drop bear) took off squealing!
True stories, these, I kid you not! |

I loved the seven months that I spent in Oz and want to go back to see the rest. From the top of MT Kosioscko to the Great Barrier Reef a beautiful country. Being from Canada I can understand after all I live in an igloo and take a dogsled to work! |
