im speaking as an Australian living in the US and I can tell you that no matter how long i live in the US i will always, always call Australia home and just think that its a better country over all...
i came to the US legally and am awaiting residence status...but in the meantime i cant get health insurance, a driver's license issued from the state where i am living, i cant get a job, my daughter cant attend daycare (her dad is American, but she was born in Australia)...and these are just the few things that i can think of off the top of my head...
i find that people in the US are very quick to judge...im a white woman with a bi-racial daughter...its assumed that im not with the father and the child that i am carrying is with another man, i am married to my daughters father and i will have two kids by the same father before the year is over....in Australia, i never experienced this...
i have experienced flat out racism...due to my being married to a black man, within church communities to say that least....been called a "gold digger" (ummm..i was making twice as much money when we met, he was unemployed just out of the Navy...so yeah, im a gold digger)...this is because i do not work at the moment, not for lack of trying, i cant even get a job until more papers from immigration come through in about 6-8 months...
in Australia we never experienced stuff like this, people are much more tolerant over all, not quick to judge due to the way a situation looks and would much rather ask questions before passing judgment....
honestly, over all the US is an all right place to live for a short period of time, but i will not be growing old here and my children will not being attending school here for a long time....
Australia is just, well, Australia...its a state of mind. we are relaxed, tend not to allow ourselves to be stressed out and things that are not important do not tend to bother us...if it doesnt affect family or health, then who cares???? |

Australia:
Clean air and unspoiled surroundings, friendly people, gorgeous beaches, safe schools, proud of their country, ready to help with climate control in any way, smaller cars, fresh food, healthy lifestyles, less obesity, good health care and free hospitals, weird sense of humour and ability to laugh at themselves. Aussies love being 'down under' - it makes us feel safe from the dangers above, and we like the fact that most people actually forget that we're down here.
USA:
Proud people, arrogant at times, better technology, better road system and public transport, more to see and do, superb national parks, great shopping, monuments everywhere, huge differences between states, safety issues re guns and poor eating habits and lack of exercise for most people. You guys eat out too often. |

some great answers so far ...
my own answer goes as this....
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been born in Australia .. my feelings have nothing to do with rabid patriotism .. I am not a flag waving , anthem singing aussie.. infact I don't think most aussies are .. we are well aware what we have here and I think most of us appreciate it.
We have risen from what was a penal colony ( and I just have to say what moron thought it was a sentence to send criminals to paradise .. ok that's a joke .. the convicts and free settlers battled extreme hardships... BUT that is a part of what has made our Psyche) to this wonderful place to live. Where anybody if driven enough can make good, I'll use Eddie McGuire as an example... kid from the poorer suburbs.. became CEO of Kerry Packers Channel Nine .. that's some rise...
where we have relatively mild winters, and few extreme natural disasters. and THEN when we do .. all pull together to help each other out.
We have nasty critters . .but for those who are afraid of our snakes and spiders you really need to consider that when we go out , we're not going to risk facing mountain lions or coyotes or wolves or bears or tigers or hippos ( which are very dangerous animals) .. so I'll keep our nasties IF you promise to keep yours...
We have a fine and wonderful ally across the straight that shares a brave and tragic history with us in our alliance during World War one .. and for all the while we hang shyte on one another .. God help anybody who seriously attacks them because ANZAC is a word that we will never forget.
We are an irreverant bunch .. and I type THAT everso proudly .. we will Never put our poiliticians on the pedastals that we see the american presidents put upon .. we will ALWAYS insult the politicians and poke fun at them because they ARE no better than any one of us and we won't allow them to forget it
We have a socialistic core .. and while some in the world see that as being a Dirty word . .all it means is that we WILL always fight for a decent public health system, a free public education system. We will always give to The Royal Children's Hospital Appeal, we will always give to the Salvos , to the guys who collect for the CFA at traffic lights.. and when there is a disaster somewhere in the world .. we will dig deep into out pockets..
we are NOT perfect .. NO PLACE is perfect ..I can't say we are .. and it would be pretentious of me to say MY country is better than yours .. For ME .. My Country is Best.. just as yours may be for you .. I'll respect your view .. can you mine ? |

Well i've been living abroad, and i miss my Home. The weather is Fantastic, Queensland only really get two seasons, Summer and a winter of around 19-20 degrees. The health system is great compared ti NZ and other countries, we have medicare and it's almost free. The Girls are mostly fine boned and on the east of what i see are very beautiful. The guys are slightly so layd back they're a wee bit lazy and a some (mans man). I would definatley recommend travelling there, it is amazing in every state and territory something you'll never forget.
Highly recommend Broome and The east coast, Bondi Beach, Airlie Beach - The Whitsundays. |

I have been livning in Australia for 20 years now. I found that Australians are laid back for sure, but also their way of thinking and not accepting new things and environment.
I am an Asian immigrant back from the 80s. At that time I experienced Racism. I went back to Hong Kong to work after I finished hgh school and realized that there was a big gap of fashion, technology and society. Hong Kong is more open in turns of fashion, technolgy and the people are more accepting of new things and culture.
Back in Australia, people are still laid back. For example we have new ticket machines but still most people go to the ticket window. Also I lived in both Sydney and Melbourne and just realized that people in Sydney are unfriendly and judgemental compares to Melbourne
So it depends where you live really. There are not many Black Americans live in Australia for sure, rather Aborigines.
Hope my experiences help |

Australia versus NZ:
I lived 5 years in NZ and 3 years in Australia, I have also travelled to a lot of other countries including USA.
My Opinion about Australia:people are very polite, open minded and have good manners. It is a safe place to live .People do not carry guns....But it is hot during the summer.NZ in comparison: People are narrow minded abusive and have no whatsoever MANNERS....it is a small country and if they get the opportunity they shake you hard so that all the money comes out of all your pockets. If you want to ask any question about Australia I can answer it. |
