Strange how so many people put Adelaide down.
The City is clean and airy. It is known as the festival State and depending when you intend to travel you can visit some spectacular events. We host the cycling Down under Tour. The Womadealide festival that invites musicians and artists from all over the world to put on a show. We host The big day out. Rock concert spectacular.
It is a City of parks and gardens. Botanic Gardens is worth a visit, as The National Wine Centre right alongside. The Festival Theatre is always a must to visit and enjoy a show.
There are great Cafes and Bistros at the East End of Town and a Chinese Centre at the Southern end near Victoria Square. Glenelg ( via Tram) to the Beach and shops is an absolute delight. Trips to the Barossa Valley to visit the Wine area and tastings is excellent as is the trip to the Southern wineries at McLaren Vale. Heaps of top Class restaurants. In Fact Adelaide is renowned for its restaurants One in the East End having won the MY Restaurant TV competition. ( The Hungry Goose)
There are Churches and at one time Adelaide was the City of Churches but life and culture have changed that. They are still there of course but not the only things to visit.
The river Torrens near the festival Theatre has boat rides and good Picnic Facilities. Right opposite is the Adelaide Zoo. So there are lots of things here really, its just that residents tend to take it all for granted and are not the best ambassadors for their home State. I suggest you pick up a Tourist Guide for Adelaide and follow up on some of the things I have mentioned. I am sure you wont be dissapointed.

I've just returned to Queensland after a 2 week Adelaide holiday. I thought it was a pretty good place to visit and plenty of tours to go on. The Museum and the Zoo are great. Trips to Glenelg Beach and the wineries plus Kangaroo Island were terrific. A ride on the Obarn bus to Tee Tree Shopping Centre was a different experience.The country town of Hahndorf near Adelaide had the best meat pies in Australia at the Pot Belly Pie Shop.
I've been to Melbourne for the last 2 years holidays and agree with others that it is a more vibrant city than Adelaide.

There is not a lot to do, its just one of those "nice" cities. Great to walk around and absorb things. Super little pubs to have a quiet beer in, watch a band in later on. Has a casino! Good, no actually Great Restaurants, ask a local to recommend one or two for you as the ones that tourists get sent to are usually pretty ordinary.
Wineries are a short distance from the city in pretty much all directions and they are great.

Adelaide is pretty boring I;m afraid to say, I live here. There's good ol faithful "The Barrossa Valley" woopee!! Great if you want to go wine tasting, then in the city there isnt much to do you have the Botanic Gardens and the Mirky poisoness River Torrens, we have a Zoo with no elephant, no girraffes anymore, no bears, even the monkeys are going Ive heard, you could drive down to the Glenelg beach but there are plenty of beaches there but its not surfers. Let me see what else!! An hour down south is Victor Harbor, nice for a day trip, four hours drive north you come to the Flinders Ranges not exactly in Adelaide though. Thats about it, oh and dont forget Adelaide is pretty well CLOSED on the weekend. Now foods!! Lots of Asian if you like that, watch where you go though they have a pretty bad rep here, we have McDonalds, lol.. If I was a touristI honestly I would bypass Adelaide and head straight to Melbourne, then Sydney and finally Queensland. Remember I live here and cant wait to leave, only staying for parents sake, when that day ever comes I'm outta here and heading for Queensland. If you want quiet and feel like retiring to a slow, boring city come to Adelaide. Peace.

I have been sitting for five minutes trying to think of something else. I lived in Adelaide for most of my life although I now live in Tasmania.
Adelaide is a nice city but not really exciting. It was once for a week every year when we had the Formula One Grand Prix.
I used to like the cafe's, restaurants and pubs around the city and suburbs. I liked driving all the way from the southern beaches to the Port Adelaide. There used to be a good market in the wharf shed there on Sundays' don't know if it is still going. I liked Central Market for food too. The tram ride to Glenelg is fun but Glenelg is too built up now and not a real seaside town any more. What else did I like? The natural history museum in North Terrace, the shops in Rundle Mall, the National Rail Museum in Port Adelaide.
Would I move back to Adelaide from here. Never! I like Hobart even though it is smaller than Adelaide. Adelaide is too hot in summer .
By the way it takes about 8-10 hours to go to Melbourne on a bus so you could go in a day but not come back.

I've never been to Adelaide, but I've been to Perth, Melbourne and Sydney.

Australia is alot like the US. It's almost boring. A lot of men like to go there because as soon as they find out you're American, the women start flirting with you. It happened every time I went, and I even had an Australian woman hitting on me in Malaysia! (She was behind me in line for a cab and asked me a question. I gave her some kind of short answer, and she asked, "What part of the US are you from?". Didn't matter. Her next question was, "Want to share a cab?" And you know, I'm not really attractive, average, perhaps.)

Don't spend more than 4 days..you will get bored!
You can actually sightsee 3 or 4 days..
There are nice trams to take you to the Beach.
There are some nice fountains and statues.
There is regular food, same as American, really..
And if you got time, catch the bus to Melbourne you can do this in a day...good luck!
