What did you miss from Britain in Oz? |
My sister and her family (one niece, two nephews) have all moved to Oz. I'm sending a parcel out with a birthday pressie for my sis. I've incuded a few cards and letters for the kids but wanted to include a few bits to remind them of home. Thought about things such as chocolate etc, can you get Cadbury's choclate in Oz? Would it be ok to send chocolate in a parcel or will it all melt? Any other ideas? I've thought about including a local paper and some celebrity gossip magazines. What else could I put in? British tea bags? As I've never been to Oz I don't know how things compare and what I would miss. Any ideas? Additional Details PLEASE BE HELPFUL - ONLY ANSWER IF YOU HAVE A GENUINE IDEA - I REALLY AM STUCK FOR WHAT TO SEND THEM! |

I'll try to answer your questions one by one.
1. We have Cadbury chocolate and Mars Bars, Violet Crumble etc.
2. You can't send foodstuff into Australia especially with the Foot and Mouth outbreak in Britain.
3. I'm sure your love and fond wishes will be much appreciated by all.
4. The local paper sounds like a fabulous idea. I did that every couple of weeks, when my daughter moved to the Torres Strait. I'd bundle up a few and send them. She enjoyed reading the local news very much.
5. I don't know what mags you mean, we do get Hello, English Womans Weekly etc here. That may be a good idea if the ones you mean are hard to get here.
6. We do have Tetley, Twinings and Lipton etc tea here.
You could try sending us some rain we desperately need buckets of it.
Best thing is to ask what they would like sent out.
The local paper is a great idea though. |

Yes, you can get cadbury's in Australia, but it's their own. Tastes just the same to me, but mind you, some people have different opinions about it. Actually, they do have a lot of similar products - there's OK magazine, they sell 'English' tea, etc. In fact, I saw a shop completely dedicated to English food in a town called Caloundra in Queensland, and a candy shop in Melbourne that that had a mini cheddars and other sweets! I'd send a local paper, that's something they are surely not going to have! Maybe some packets of HP Sauce? Although i'm not certain that will get through quarantine. A dvd with some good British humour - that's something I missed! Postcards of your local area? How about instructions on how to make a crisp sandwich?! Australians looked at me weird whenever I made one of those...!!
Hope these ideas help a little. : ) |

You aren't allowed to send foodstuffs into Australia! So please don't send any chocolate or tea bags. When you post the parcel you have to sign a customs declaration declaring that there is no food or plants or anything in it. |

I get my Mum to send me Marmite, when I go back home the first thing I do is get loads of crisps as there are hardly and choices here, also chocolate taste different in Aus, so that might be an idea, also i love to try any new products/chocs which i haven't seen before.
(You can send food products as long as the are sealed in their orginal package.)
I also get updates on Eastenders! Love to read UK newspapers, footie results, gossip mags, I think you've covered it really! |

Ask them if there's any thing they miss, then try and find a gift that meets their need.
As for footy and British comedy (listed above) if they have Foxtel or Austar then they would have UKTV and UKTV+2 (24 hours of UK programs) and they would probably also have the comedy channel which plays many of the British comedies. and you can see almost every game of footy on the fox channels and sport channels.
You can get any magazine here ( as with almost everywhere, you just need a subscription for some that aren't commonly sold at the shops) and you can also get the newspapers from most news agents you just need to order them (obviously they are not that days paper and it will cost you to get them here)
Cadburys is also available.
So all i can suggest is when you chat with them next, find out if they're missing some thing, most people just like pic's of their home town to remind them... |
