What do Australians call Apartments or places to live??? |
I want to move to australia and i looked up apartment listings but all that came up was hotel rooms, so im guessing thats what they call hotel rooms? What do they call the place they live in like Apartments, please help. |

We call them home units , town houses or villas.....home units are multi story blocks , town houses are low density but each home has 2 storys & a very small area of land , villas are low density , single story& also with a very small area of land. |

Try searching not onlt for 'Apartment' but for 'Unit', 'Flat', 'Townhouse', 'duplex' etc
I live in what's called a two storey Townhouse. (Me and my neighbour share a common wall, sort of like a duplex but two stories tall). |

Yes we have apartments that we live in . They are usually called apartments if they have full living areas whether or not someone lives in them or rents it out or a hotel apartment for holiday accomodation. So these are usually high rise buildings. I live in an apartment it has 3 stories and 12 units in it . Yes they can be called units as well or we have houses and duplexes which is 2 houses built together. we have units in complexes which is often in a gated community many of them are often joined together. So look under homes for rent in google or rental accomodation |

Apartments are called flats or units.
Garden flats are flats built at the rear of a regular home (like the Fonz had)
Row houses are called Town Houses (2 levels) or Villas (single level)
Semi-detached homes are called a Duplex (3 together are called a Triplex).
Strata titled homes usually means a block of flats or townhouses with shared areas that are normally owned by the people that live in them. They make major decisions about the property as a group. Independent property managers usually look after the everyday maintenance of the common areas.
A hotel would refer to its penthouse or more expensive rooms as Apartments. You might also see advertisements for serviced apartments. This mean's its a flat that comes with housekeeping like a hotel.
Just remember that a lot of Australian language has its roots in the Queens English. So we do copy the Brits a fair bit. |
