What do people HONESTLY think Australia is like?

I'm an Australian, and I'm aware that there are a LOT of misconceptions about my country and i'm just wondering what some people really do think Australia is like! i'm mainly wanting non-australian people who've never been here, but if you haven't been in a while etc then i'm keen to know also!
Additional Details
(Just wanted to say to anyone who wants to come to Australia, don't just think sydney, melbourne is OFTEN OFTEN overlooked and amongst majority of Australians, Melbourne is the Favourite!)

Hi,

I'm from England but went to Australia in 2005. Did just under a week in Sydney, and just over a week up in Surfers Paradise. Unfortunately, due to work commitments this was all the time I could get there and would love to have spent more time there.

I must say I found Aussie people to be the nicest people I've ever met. I was in New Zealand for a bit and in the hotel I was at was a group of people from Melbourne (3 guys and their wives) We had such a good laugh with them.

Sydney was quite possibly the best place I've ever been in terms of diversity. You have the inner city life, then the beach scene, and just a short trip by car and you're up in the blue mountains. It's just mind-blowing.

I am disappointed that I didn't make the time to get to Ularu. I just don't know why I didn't go. Weird. However, I do intend to return to Oz, hopefully getting to see some of the West coast next time.

Australia gets the thumbs up from me!!

I'm an american girl ..born and raised (nyc area) suburbs..
Anyway, Australlia seems so far and so ooooooooooooooo beautiful!
I realy want to go but don't know if I can handle the flight. I want to see the ocean there/kangaroo/food/everything! Plus I love the accent. Should've married an aussie..ahhhhhhhh to dream..

So is it true? Is it really beautiful?

I am actually travelling there next week for 5 months, have never been before. I know the country is massive but think its 10 times bigger than I actually think. Wonderful sights and beaches, lovely weather all year round, lots of space which is just nothing! The aussies I hav met are nice. I feel that aussies are proud of their country and very welcoming to people visiting. I think it must be quite a healthy country in terms of lifestyle, as I cant recall seing an obese aussie! Loads of weird and rare animals, the most poisonous of animals also. Then again though I am from uk, so all im used to is well overweight people, foreigners, rain, crowded cities, football, and boozing! I think oz is a wonderful country and will find out over the next 5 months!!

i have lived here for quite sometime and i have loved it here. i love the nice and cool weather, the fact that i could have the best of both worlds- nature and an industrialized country.

the people are so0o0o0 polite and very friendly. i have never been to a place wherein people would greet the bus driver upon entering and says thank you as soon as they get off the bus..wow! fantastic. really fantastic.

Big country,
crowded cities, lots of space in the countryside.
maybe more single story buildings, employment dodgy, but maybe better standard of living?
But what would I know, never been there.

I've never been. I imagine it to be hot and huge, full of deadly and poisonous creatures who want to eat me and dusty and flat once you get away from the coast. I imagine the east, west and south coastal areas to be stunningly beautiful and the north coast to be wild and inaccessible.

The average Aussie I've met on my travels usually tells me that all the good ones leave and that the ones who are left behind are generally cranky and close-minded - I think I'd wait to make my own mind up on that one, although I have found that Australians don't take very well to being slagged off or teased - a little lacking in the sense of humour department, perhaps? Recent news stories make Australia out to be fairly unwelcoming to visitors and quite racist, but I think that's true of every country really, so I wouldn't base my judgement on the media.

I wanted to move to Australia when I was younger but the urge went away in recent years - a mix of me not liking hot weather, the novelty wearing off because so many people I know have gone there, and personal preference for places more removed from the beaten track.

Having said that, if I ever have kids I think I'd like to visit for a couple of months - I imagine it would be a good combination of exoticism and familiarity for travelling with young kids. If I did that I'd probably do the tried and tested roadtrip-in-a-Kombi thing and see as much of the country as possible. Especially if its true that large parts of the interior are below sea level and under threat from global warming?? I guess the carbon footprint of my flight to Oz wouldn't really help in that respect, would it? And I have heard before that Melbourne is the best city to visit, it would definitely be on my list of places to see.

Although I have been here for some years now, I do have a perspective on what many Brits do think.

They hear stories from others who have been on Holiday, and we all know that almost every country is really great, while we are on holiday, well, Australia is no different, well, maybe a bit better :)

End result, is that many British create an ideal impression of Australia.

Sun, Beaches, warm weather, relaxed lifestyle etc etc.

But living here is different to holidaying. We need to find time to go to work! Time to go shopping, and all those other "normal" things that we do when not on holiday.

Many of those British that do return home after a trial migration, are those that expected too much from the country. Official figures do show that about 30% of Brits do return home at some stage, but they don't quote how many "boomerang" back to Australia, after a short time back "home" again :) About 90% do stay for 5 or more years though.
