Go to the Melbourne Visitor Centre. Get the leaflets for the free tram and shuttle bus around the city.If you stay on all the way round you get a good overview of Melbourne in just over 2 hours. and then use them hopping on and off to get where you want to go. There is also a greeter service where someone will walk you around the city 2-3 hours including arcades and lanes, history, architecture, street art and lots more check it out at www.thatsmelbourne.com.au and you can sign up online. Alternatively, get the leaflets on the walks around the city. There is so much to do. Suggest you consider Docklands, Southbank, Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Gaol, Botanical Gardens, Federation Square, have a tour around the MCG, State Library. Two good day trips would be The Great Ocean Road and Sovereign Hill. At night time there is the Crown Casino and just before the hour from nine oclock you can see the gas flames shoot up into the air. The grand Prix is on 13-17 March 2008

You can visit phillip island (with the penguin parade - very cute)
but if you really want to experience the life of melbourne, you have to go to the footy

Go to Phillip Island - you see a penguin parade and it's pretty cool!
Take a drive down The Great Ocean Road and see the 12 Apostles... well, what's left of them anyway. Prettiest drive ever! You hug the shore and you can always see the sea... it's really nice.
I guess you COULD go to Ballarat and see Sovereign Hill. It's a small place which is still conserved to look like the 1850s and it shows what it would have looked like during the gold rush times... panning for gold isn't always that successful, though.
There are also tours of the actual city itself, but the best way to really see the Melbourne city is to jump on a tram and go around the CBD. There may not be a lot to do and see, but it is a nice place. Shopping is good too, in the city!
You could also go to Crown Casino.
Or there are shows in the Victorian Arts Centre - theatre plays, ballets, etc. Some of them are quite good.
There's also a good shopping centre called Chadstone Shopping Centre, but it's hard to get to by public transport.
But to be a true Melbournian, you HAVE to go to the footy. It just... is a must. The MCG is unbelievable, especially during clashes between rivals. The cricket is good, too, but the footy is Melbourne at its purist.
Hope you have fun in Melbourne! Best city in the world, in my opinion (but I may be slightly biased)

!...♥G♥...!
Go To Melbourne Zoo, it is brilliant!

Then After You Have Been There Go To The Aquarium, Both are fantastic experiances!!!!!!! very memorable!!!!!!!
Stop and Have a Look Through China Town!
Go Shopping!!!!!!
and last but not least!

GO TO THE FOOTY! (AFL, Australian Football)
There should be a game on, if you go on a weekend or friday night! YOU MUST!
