The first thing that comes to my mind is always the giant hopping mouse.
The next thing is the large number of people who think that Austria and Australia are the same place.
I have friends and relatives who are currently living down under, and more who have lived there and returned. I have watched all the Crocodile Dundee movies. Does that qualify me as an expert?
I would love to visit Alice Springs, see that big rock (What do they call it again?) and see some of the famous peanut stone.

Been to Australia twice.. but I'll answer the question using my judgements before I went to Australia.

I thought Australia was really warm and that Australians loved the beach and surfing. That Gold Coast was full of themeparks. That they LOVE sports especially auzzie rules and the afl. That their national colours were green and yellow. That they had poisonous snakes .. and cute koalas, dingos, wombats, playtpus and echinda. I could go on and on ... Oh and that they said "Good day mate!" Which they actually do ... happened at the airport just when we arrived. Ohhh they also have rivalry with the great New Zealand.

OK I know that this question is for non-Aussie's but I haven't been there for 11 and a half months which is kinda the same thing LOL ;o)

When I think of Australia, I think of simply the greatest place on earth, and I can't wait to get back in 2 weeks!!!!

ON THE MINUS SIDE: Lots of dangerous critters on the land and in the sea, cane toads and other invasive species, heavy beer drinking, prejudice against aboriginals and asians, endless empty deserts in the middle with huge distances to travel across the continent
ON THE PLUS SIDE: relatively friendly laid-back people, lots of room to expand, good sense of humor, lots of natural resources like minerals, the sydney opera house, nice climate in the south and west (esp. Perth) sailing, great barrier reef, diving,
