What do you think is the solution to migrant gang violence in Australia? |
I have seen that recently a lot of migrant groups have been getting in trouble due to gang violence. How could we solve this problem effectively? My view is that there is a need for a program that helps migrants adjust to the Australian way of life.Do other Australians have any other suggestions?

It's not always about adjustment it's sometimes about defending themselves from our racist/violent sometimes drunken Australian gangs. Behaviour and racism are learnt in the home, so lets start there. |

First up, let me say it's not just a migrant problem, remember the Werribee bogan kids who made a video of their assault on a disabled girl?
Anyway, we need to make people work for welfare payments. I think that most crime occurs because people have nothing to do. Get them picking up litter, removing graffiti, there's lots of work that wouldn't put anyone else out of a job and would improve the community. You could pay them a high rate of pay but limit the hours that they are allowed to work so that the welfare cost would not increase. |

They only form gangs out of fear. Give it a few generations and it will all calm down. I had a Lebanese mate at school who didn't want to go to school after the Cronulla riots. And remember the white middle class kids wishing they were 'gangsta'. Kinda sad really. |

If you speak specifically about refugee, migrant violence, then probably the best way to approach it is with mentoring. A very good friend (who has now returned to his homeland, because he feels that he can do more there), did exactly that.
In fact, he helped all of his country-folk assimilate into Australian life (while also remembering their own traditions). He spoke to all politicians and the media at every opportunity and formed an association and stood for president, of that association. Unfortunately, the person who overthrew him (on tribal grounds), wanted only the power that the position had (within his own community). All things that had changed, reverted. When he returns, then he will probably re-stand in some form and try to restore the lack of interest, that has been shown, by successive governments and the public (when there is no fighting, then nobody seems to care).
To use Australians, doesn't go close to fixing the problem, that exists, when one comes to a new country and does not know how to act. They need to be of that country and not only empathise, but KNOW what is happening to them and point out the right directions and how to get there. THEN Australians can get involved, by actively supporting them in what they do and befriending.
I do agree that a program needs to be initiated, but in a mentoring context (shown, not told), or if literate, then by the families of others, who don't carry the race-card to it's worst outcomes (families who can set a good example). |

Gang violence has been around for a while .Its nothing new .
I was from bogan living in Altona and went to Altona North Tech.
We'd fight because we were being stupid .
We weren't migrants but a fair few of our friends were.
We had too much time on our hands.
Too much drugs, drug trading and alcohol around us.
Not enough parental guidance or control .
And mainly we didn't care much about the community we lived in or the damage we did.
No real interest in educating ourselves.
I think gang violence occurs for some of the reasons mentioned
above but not only migrant gangs are violent, there are plenty of home grown violent gangs too.

Gangs develop when there is an element of fear, and a notion of having to "huddle together" to survive.
I think there needs to be a motivation to prefer to entrust themselves to the new home country and its opportunities, rather than to ganging up with old kin. Furthermore, Australia's philosophy is one of equal rights on the basis of accepting equal obligations, and acceptance of that should be conditional on an ongoing basis in some way in order to ensure continued residence. Migrants are often outsiders, which breeds gangs.
That factor needs to disappear.
Mechanisms must be created to foster an increased, long-term societal success rate among migrants.
I think the best way forward in this would be for Australia to market itself more as a place which can actually build your character, and which will change you as a migrant. All new countries change you, but it's necessary to make interested parties aware of this before they make the jump. Not wanting to become fully part of a community is what breeds problems, so two things will need to happen:
1. Integration must offer incentives
2. Immigration must include ideological commitments |

Stop the immigration for a while and make sure migrants know our laws, rules of society, culture and appropriate behaviour BEFORE they let any more in ,,if they dont like the way our society lives......then dont come.
I apologise if any of you take offence to my answer, this is just my opinion. |

i think there needs to be more information for migrants on australian customs and law enforcement. the problem with for example, Sudanese people coming to australia is where they are from their police don't enforce the law so people take the law into their own hands, which is quite understandable.
the government needs to take measures to explain that that is not how we do things, when you have a problem you call the police, you don't just hit someone.
i think with migrants it's the cultural difference that it the main part of the problem. |
