I think it is great (we have trucks). We parked our trucks up as well. The fuel is not the only thing, there is so much more to it than just fuel. Fuel is a killer for us but the problem is trucks aren't getting the pay increase to combat the fuel.

There was a lot of support out there today but no where near enough.

As my husband says "He ain't going to work if it is going to cost him money to do the job" And believe me some jobs we do costs us money, can you believe having to pay for yourself to go to work!

I think alot of people just don't understand the cost of having trucks!!

Without trucks Australia Stops!!!!

We can't do without truckies, and they deserve more credit and respect than what they get. Good luck to them.

Living in a rural area of Australia I have to say that I think the strike is ill-founded. Their strike will not lower the price of petrol but will have a flow on effect of raising prices because there will be a backlog of items waiting to be freighted.

These sorts of strikes affect rural people much more than city people as often trucks are the only way of getting items delivered.

Petrol is F$$$$ ridiculous, why should they bare the cost when W and C Supermarkets charge us squillions more than the farmer gets, surely the profit they get can be divided down the line. I would hate to be a truck driver, deadlines, dick heads and dud drivers. If it makes people stop and think and gets some discussions going, I say why not, the truckies are sticking to one lane when they protest, put yourself in their situation.

I think one of the biggest issues is that they are paid by the km travelled and not by the hour. This means that because of the cost of fuel - which is ridiculous, that they have to travel more kms over a shorter period of time to make the same amount of money. This sort of nonsense puts lives at risk.

Add to that the interest rate pressures, and you've got a recipie for 'through the roof' stress.

I've just heard t on the radio that they have started their rolling blockade through the streets of central Brisbane.
It would look spectacular seeing all those trucks through the middle of the city, but I pity the poor motorist stuck in the middle of it all.

I'm not a fan of striking for the sake of striking, but if the powers that be don't listen any other way then sometimes it has to be done.
Lets hope it's over before too long.

I agree. I think truckies suffer a lot of stress from time constraints. They seem to be expected to drive night and day despite the rules saying that they have to take a certain amount of time for breaks. People are so impatient and want their goods fast. I think we should all slow down and do ourselves a favour! Now the new burden on us all, but particularly truckies, of increases in the price of fuel, will just be a further stress on them.
I hope the strike will be resolved quickly, for selfish reasons too, I don't want to starve because the shops run out of food! :)

I say good luck to them to people don't understand how hard the truckies have it, the city people have to also realise with out the truckies they wouldn't have there fresh food or anything they take for granted go truckies go.

GOOD ON THEM. I'm all for it. I feel sorry for these guys. They don't get a good enough mention in our country.
I don't mind if it affects my shopping - there are more important things in this world and don't get me wrong, I LOVE this country, but, quite frankly, it is turning to $h!t. If we keep going the way things are then we won't have much of a country to bring my grandkids up in. Or my kids for that matter, I'm only 21.
Last night I saw a whole group of truckies lining up at 8.30 - in the freezing cold. No doubt they were picking up another load to truck across the country. I thank them for delivering my products to the shops - the poor souls must have been FREEZING!
a friend of my bf's is a truck driver - although he just delivers furniture. But it's still stressful. He took me and my bf out with him on his rounds one day...even though we were only doing Sydney area (and Avalon area) he was still under the pump, having to get things delivered by a certain time. No breaks there...I can't begin to imagine what it's like for the "real" truckies

Baz .Abroad
English trucker in Germany,
when the fuel costs hit the truckers then those costs have to be pasted on down the chain to the end consumer.
The bigger the chains the reluctance to accept those extra costs, causing a squeeze on the hauliers.
In comparison to Oz, we have tighter time keeping here in Europe with the Tachograph being replaced by digital time card for every driver. Its rough and a pain, stopping any chance of real overtime, but the basic wage still staying low,
am sure the Aussie truckers are right to strike, their problems will be an indication of problems to come for many.

And the Rego rises!!

I think good on them. My Grandfather owns fleet of 10 trucks here in Tassie, and they are considering striking.
I know how hard they are being hit with fuel prices, and with the recent rego rise, it's only going to get worse.

My Grandfather has owned them trucks for 24 years, all my life, & I fear they may not be able to handle this strike. I did their accounts for them recently, and they are barely making even.

I say GO THE TRUCKIES!!! Sock it to the pricks in Canberra, because without them, we wouldn't have NOTHING!

yahwhoooon
If they want to go on strike and stay home then fine, If they are going to do what they did in Europe by blocking roads and driving slow holding up traffic then I say no way!!!! I think anyone has the right to strike but not to inconvience others, I just wish we could work out another way to ship goods around the country without trucks, they just ruin the roads, cause to many accidents and drive like complete tools. Their rule to live by is "get out of my way, I'm coming through" they intimidate everyone else on the roads by tailgating, speeding, driving huge rigs with a mobile phone stuck to one ear, pollute the environment etc, most are drug takin COWBOYS!!! and yes I know, my brother inlaw is a Interstate Truckie and he boasts about what he says "They all do it" from what I have seen I believe it, a Menace on our roads, Get rid of Truckies and lets work out another way, like using Trains and then smaller vehicles to deliver food etc to the shops.

The odd thing about this strike is that the Unions are against it.

The worrying thing was yesterdays report of the letter sent out telling drivers who did not strike that they could face violent action against them.

It is one thing to have a dispute, but to force some drivers to join whether they wish to or not ? Well, that can sort of defeat the purpose, as many bystanders may assume that most only joined because they were threatened, and we will never know the real numbers.

If it really is about Fuel prices, and with the price of fuel now dropping, some of the wind in the argument is being lost.

However, I think it is more to do with working conditions, about which we may not have the full story.

PS: I used to run and drive my own trucks.
