We have many friends in Australia and toured the whole country for a year - now we would have to say the food associated with Australia is MEAT PIES.
There are hundreds of small and big bakeries with speciality meat pies, and they were all delicious. |

"it's time to throw another shrimp on the barby". i'm guessing not many australians actually say that. i would say toast with vegemite. |

I think that the only uniquely Australian food is definitely meat pies.
Although almost all other countries have pies as a dish, Australia is the only one that I have found where pies are available as a take away/out (not really fast food) snack or meal almost anywhere that there is a shop or service station. And they have become pretty good at making some very tasty pies. |

Australia is very multi-ethnic cuisine-wise these days. I doubt very very much whether any of us actually eat kangaroo or rabbit stew as said above! Up until 20 or so years ago you would say that Australia used to be 'English' cuisine with meat & 3 veg, but now common meals would include pastas, curries, etc.
There are however, specific Australian variations incorporated in some ethnic foods, eg at many 'Italian' restaurants it is common to have pasta and chips on the menu. |

Vegemite, lamingtons, kangaroo stew.. rabbit stew... all the best food.
OMG who gave me the thumbs down??
I am an australian- and the best aussie foods in my opinion are as I stated, I have alot of relatives that still eat this kind of food today... just because you dont know anyone who eats rabbit and roo stew, doesnt mean it doesnt happen, and if you are an Aussie and lived here all your life, and are unaware that people still eat Rabbit and kangaroo, then you need to get out of the city and learn about your country. No offense.
Obviously I have offended someone... lol. |
