A Maori is an indigenous New Zealander.
I wouldn't take it to be offensive but it would depend on the context i guess. |

It's a native New Zealander, like the Australian Aboriginals, but from NZ. They traditionally were warriors, so alot of them are big (not fat, but large built) and the sort that you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley. |

The Maori are an indigenous people who live in New Zealand. They are well known as fierce warriors and tribal tattoos (among many other things). Not completely representative, but a wonderful book/movie to check out is "Once Were Warriors." |

A Maori is to New Zealand as an American Indian is to the United States. They are both the original indigenous people of those places. The Haka chant/stomp (the one where they poke out their tongues and stomp their feet at their opponents) that New Zealanders perform just before almost every international sporting competition is based on the traditional Maori war dance. The Maori were so ferocious that Britain chose to sign a treaty with them rather than take them on in war.
Sidenote: Americans watching the Amazing race might have noticed the Haka being performed during one of the detours passing through one particular New Zealand segment. |
