It is a general term to cover the South Pacific area, lumping countries together i.e. Australia, New Zealand, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa etc.
Just like saying Western Europe, or the Americas, but for the South Pacific. Australia and New Zealand have many common features, so sometimes it is easier to use the word Australasia than list out the countries you mean. But be careful as other countries in this grouping like Samoa or PNG are quite different to Australia and NZ. |
