What is cheapest way to phone an Australian mobile from England (my son is travelling in Oz)?

I would do some research yourself, like I did when I was a mum in England with a son travelling in Oz. I found that my phone provider (Telewest) offered the best landline-to-mobile deal, although it still wasn't cheap. In the end, I got my son pretty much pinned down to visiting an internet cafe at the same time every week (it was Sunday morning his time, Saturday night UK time - nb this will vary depending on daylight saving) and we talked on MSN Messenger. If this isn't practical for your boy, I can only suggest asking your mobile and landline providers for their best deals, or look into buying a phonecard online or from the newsagent. Ask in the newsagent's which would be the cheapest for your purpose (they should have a table of the relative charges in the shop), or shop around yourself online, and do some comparisons. The link below is just a suggestion - there are many, many more of them!

You can buy a pay as you go sim card called Lebara Mobile. You can get them from almost every phone shop and they're really cheap.
It's just a sim card which you put into your mobile phone and make calls with.
From the UK to Australia the prices are 4p per min to a landline and 13p to a mobile.
I use mine to call my brother in Australia all the time.
It's definately worth buying one.
Call into a phone shop and ask about them.
Hope this helps.

One Tel charge £0.25 per min to mobiles, or £0.03 to Landlines using the International caller option.

Another one for £0.09 per minute to mobiles is http://www.ratebuster.co.uk

Never use just your land line - your bill will be huge in a snap. Instead, use a phone card - these can be purchased in any every shop (eg. convenience stores, supermarkets, grocery stores, etc.) and choose one that has the best rates and is most suitable to call the country you're after. Each company is best in certain countries with their rates. It will be way cheaper.

you can probably buy a discount phone card for australia

Acid
get a prepaid international phonecard. just type the query into a search engine and find some sites to compare rates. you can buy alot of them online and they send you a pin number to your inbox. all you need to do is follow the instructions on the site for that card and then dial the number.
