What is considered to be the 'Australian car'?

Iconic Australian Car models were the Australian Six (A car made before WW2).
FX, FJ, EH, and HT Holdens, and also the HT & HQ Monaro, Kingswood, Torana and VA Commodore from GMH.
The P76 and Mini Moke from Leyland.
The AP5, AP6, Charger and Sigma from Chrysler.
The XM, XP, XY, XB and XC Falcons from Ford.
The OKA from OKA in Welshpool WA.
Eureka Purvis (although this was sold in kit form).
and of course Tail End Charlie, the Chamberlain Tractor that was in the 1955 World Rally.

The most obvious out of this lot would be
1. FX Holden as drawn in the ettamogah pub cartoons
2. HQ Holden Kingswood as in the TV Series Kingswood Country
3. Torana made famous in Mad Max 1 movie

Holden has always been considered the 'the Australian car', but really, Holdens are no longer any more Australian than any other car largely manufactured in Australia.

JJ
Everyone knows real australians drive holdens :)

Holden Commodore baby.

I think a nice dusty, rusted out Landcruiser looks more Aussie though.

Of existing manufacturers, Holden was the first to manufacture in Australia, and has been considered THE Australian car since it was introduced in 1948 (?). Even though Holden is now just a GM subsidiary.

The classic Holden was the FJ. The current "popular" Aus made model is the Commodore (the name being about 30 years old now). But ute's (pick ups) have a special place in the heart of many an Australian bloke. with a bumper sticker "Real Aussies drive ute's" being fairly popular.

However, in popular petrol-head culture Ford now is a close second. Holden vs Ford is a constant "debate".

Forget those comments about other makes like Leyland, Chrysler etc. Might have a few afficionados, but that's all.

Holden (GM), Ford, Toyota are now the only car manufacturers in Australia (only one or two models, rest imported). Mitusbishi quit only a few weeks ago, Nissan a few years ago.

Holden all the way from the FJ to the
SS commodore
