What is good stuff to send to a person in Australia? |
A girl I know is moving to Aussie-land and wants to take some things that we have in the USA but might be hard to find or unavailable over there. Foodstuffs, toiletries, etc. |

There will be almost every brand of food and toiletries (of major companies at least) in Australia that you can get in the USA. Some of the products might be labelled a little differently for the local market, but (almost) everything she needs she can get here.
You are more likely to have trouble finding your "locally" made / supplied products available in your own specific area. E.g. Hershey Bars are not widely available in Australia, but can be bought in specialty chocolate shops or delis. You will absolutely be able to bring in certain packaged foods (such as chocolates) as long as you DECLARE THEM AT CUSTOMS FOR INSPECTION.
Expect to find all the big brands though...such as Kelloggs, Coke, McDonalds, Gilette, Head and Shoulders, Kleenex etc. |

Forget about any food. It's absolutely forbidden to take food into Australia. If customs find out that she's trying to get something in she'll get punished.
I know that because I've got a friend who's working at the customs in Melbourne.
And any toiletries you may know in the USA are nearly the same over there. So what's the problem?
If she really wants to take something with her to remind her hometown in US then things like a good photo or poster or similar.
But nothing made of wood! This is also forbidden!
Ok, no food, wood, plants, seeds and earth or similar! |

There's not much you can't buy in Australia but there are some things you don't see much here. Mostly these are foodstuffs like some US brands of chocolate (though Whittakers is common), real Maple Syrup (though you can find it if you look around) and many of your sickliest sweets :-). Aussies just don't seem to have the same sweet tooth! Oh and some of your Jams & Jellies are hard to find.
I doubt if there'd be many toiletries at all that you wouldn't get here.
You can bring packaged foods in but they must be declared. Our customs & quarantine rules are even tougher than yours. |
