What is it with Australians and the sheep jokes towards New Zealanders?

As strange as it may seem to outsiders, an Aussies humour is to take the piss without actually ever intending any hurt. We appreciate the ability for people to not take themselves too seriously. We do not think we are better than kiwis, nor do we wish to make a mockery of you, it's more a sense of, if you can't take it then you're a pussy BUT if you can take it and indeed if you can dish it right back at us, then mate - we're all brothers and sisters. Lighten up, I'm Tasmanian and we cop it too, as do Canberra and Adelaide. Some of my closest friends and colleagues are from New Zealand and they have all learnt to deal with the Aussie humour and give it right back!

Hey we're Aussies - it's what we do! You need to learn not to take things so seriously or it will never stop. We take the piss out of our friends, our enemies, our neighbours, our families... hell we take the piss out of ourselves! The best thing to do is to give it back. It's not aimed to be nasty at all, we're not taking a dig at you personally. It's just funny, the first thing you think of when you hear 'New Zealand' is 'sheep'.

P.S. tit4tat - I'm from Tassie too. Where do you keep your other head hidden? Did you hear they're calling Tassie the Sandwich State - it's cos we're all inbred! ;-)

Loosen up will you? seriously we do this to everyone, not just the Kiwis! And most people who make these jokes have Kiwi relatives so don't mean any harm by it. Even most of the Americans take the jokes at their expense quite well and those ones are very nasty. there are even jokes about people who come from specific Australian states, eg. jokes about Tasmanians having two heads! To help you could try learning some jokes that diss the Aussies, most Australians actually find them quite funny.

One thing you need to understand about Australians is that we pay out everyone and everything, hell we're the only people in the world that pay out our own country and leaders. It's what we do. Even different states in Australia pay out each other, and these pay outs have lasted decades and will continue to.
This isn't rudeness, it's humor here.

It's just what we do. I don't do it, well mainly because I don't know any NZers.

I think, Aussies and Kiwis, just like to ake the mickey out of each other, just good fun, I am Aussie, my husband is a Kiwi and we cop jokes from boht sides and laugh

You must be the thinnest skinned NZer that I have ever had dealings with. I've worked in shearing sheds with Kiwi shearers - & you should hear the banter that goes on in there between Aussies & Kiwis.

And you are wrong - NZers do direct jokes at Aussies.....don't you follow the cricket or Rugby?

i live in Queensland and i've herd a really bad joke about kiwis and i think the people who say it are just all idiots i don't here many were i live (brisbane) only one and he was just a $hit head

Being an aussie I get the joke. There are more sheep in NZ than people, someone has to look after them, and they arent really smart creatures are they?

I'm an Aussie and actually agree with you. Some (most) of the sheep jokes go way too far and aren't at all funny, but they really are meant to be jokes even if in poor taste. We know that Kiwis aren't like that: well, not all of you anyway (sorry, couldn't resist). Go along with it and give as good as you get (our sheep are better looking than yours etc.). One bite though and you're doomed.

We're not making a mockery of you and we don't think we're better than you (except at cricket and swimming). It's just our weird sense of humour and anyone can be on the receiving end including other Aussies, yanks, poms, the Irish and anyone else who happens along.
