I stayed in NZ for about a month with my friend.
People there are really friendly and helpfull. Pace of life is a little slow for my liking but the peaceful green-nery makes everything OK. :)
It's a great place to relax and explore nature. Which part of NZ are you looking at? |

new zealand is great! I am an aussie who has moved here and must say that I like here much much better.
People here are friendly, laid back and extremly good-lookin, lol.
It is a very quite place though and not too much happens, unless you like earthquakes!
New zealand has some great bars and restuarants.
Compared to the US it will be much quiter, and laid back
The people here will not try to rip you off (sebecue!) and, well it's just a great place to live!
Hope you move here,

I don't really know what life in the US is like to compare it, btu I can compare it to the UK where I lived for 2 years.
Scenery is lovely here and quite vaired....THe South Island is considered more pretty than the North Island, but has less people (eg 1 million compared to 3 million in the North Island).
Population is MUCH less here, 4 million and as a result we don't always get things.....I found it amazing in the UK where they have everything close to where they live, while as here you have to travel for shopping, health (ie big centres will only have facilities as my Mum had to stay in Christchurch for 5 weeks (twice) to get radiation treatment..we live 4 hrs drive away in Blenheim).
So you will have to be prepared in some places not to have everything you want...places like Auckland/Wellington/Christhcurch wil have the most to offer in that sense, but if you like a more community feel then the smaller towns can offer that...of which there are many.
I find the people more relaxed here and use their weekends often to do fun things and are less work motivated as in the UK...ALTHOUGH some people are still work motivated here!
I find some areas have a slower pace, but I think thats nice and its nice to have some "space" (I found people EVERYWHERE in England really frustrating...trying to pass them on the streets etc)...but places like the main centres are reasonably busy.
I like to think we are more friendly and open and willing to share better than people in hte UK....although again people are people and some will give us a bad name.
As pointed out, we were recently voted the 2nd safest place in the world to live....mainly due to political stability (ie no civil wars, good faith in authorites etc)...but agian some areas are not as pleasant to live in...I personally have never really experienced much problems (except when I lived in South Auckland)....and its not "out there" or blatent really either.
Food costs more here and things in general will cost more due to our isolation, but we are reasonably techno savvy (ie have high rates of internet use, mobile phones, gagets) BUT often have to wait for things to arrive...but you get used to it.
House prices are rising a lot over the last few years and places like Auckland have some very high prices...but its all over the place really!
So you have to weigh up what you want, a city or town...I guess if you wanted a bit of both, live close to a city where you can access things and not be too isolated, but have a slower pace or life and have a community feel. |

I recently read an article in U.S. News and World Report and it gives New Zealand a very high rating for a place to live.
I do believe you will have to adjust to a slower and a more serene life style. |

New Zealand is a lovely place to live and raise children. I currently live and work overseas, my husband is a very widely travelled person and is yet to find somewhere that compares to NZ. He is currently working in the USA (4 states) and can't find a good reason to want to move there.
LIfestyle I think is what really makes NZ.
We can't compare to large nations as far as a lot of national resources are concerned because we simply do not have the money. The roads are not fantastic when you compare them to Australia where long distance you travel almost entirely on a freeway -- that said however, the quality of the roads are fairly good. One of the wonderful things about NZ however, is the fact that you can go someplaces and there are NO traffic lights and other places we still have dirt roads. |

Compared to where I used to live in the US, (Nebraska). There is a lot more crime and violence here in NZ. Roads are very poor quality and not many lanes on the main highway through the largest city. Hence lots of congestion on the roads. Slower pace of life. Lots of welfare people here, not much of a work ethic either, basically a lazy culture. Beaches are nice. Everything is very expensive here. Food, accomodation, utilities, clothing, is all very expensive. In fact I have found it worth while to save my clothes shopping budget to spend when I go back to the USA to visit. It more than pays for the trip and I still get more clothes than I would have if I had spent the same amount of money, including the ticket price. The only thing about NZ that is good is the weather, period. |
