melbourne. its got everything, its spontaneus (espec the weather) lots of events, heaps of jobs available, great atmosphere and great suburbs

if you are looking for a BIG TOWN or a SMALL CITY .. you could try places like Albury-wodonga ( n.s.w/vic twin towns), Shepparton, Geelong .. or for a nice unbustling capital city Brisbane.

Byron Bay! Its just so beautiful... Its on the coast, its nothing like a city, great weather, is very laid back and gorgeous gorgeous beaches there is no other place like it.
I don't live here either but always look forward to a visit. I live on the Sunshine coast which is also nice.

melbourne

it has the best culture, the best town planning and architecture with many public spaces. it is australia's most multicultural city.

many of the features that make melbourne australia's best city are a legacy of the fact that melbourne was to a large extent built at the time of and with the funds derived from the gold rush in the latter half of the 19th century.

I have to put in a word for Sydney. It's beautiful and has all the classic "sights" and the facilities you'd expect in a true world-class city, plus fabulous beaches and good transport (most of the time!). Okay, the cost of living is high but the pay is high too, if you have the right kind of job. (Honestly, though, I wouldn't choose to live in Sydney if I was low-paid - although a survey today has revealed that Adelaide is even more of a rip-off for groceries and petrol).

QLD RULES
Brisbane, because its a peace full, vibrant, happy and growing city which is flying under the radar ATM but southerners still think we are a country town which is totally false.

Come and visit and you see what I mean.

I love Melbourne but I would say Perth. Melbourne better for culture but Perth much better weather and retains more big town feel than city. Only problem is now expensive with average house 1million. Down south at Dunsborough just picture perfect (2hours south). Boom times so lots of jobs. If single I would say Melbourne for things to do, if a family then Perth.

Im from Geelong which is 1 hour from Melb.. Best place to live ever. I would never move. We have everything in a smaller city, and if you realy wanna go to melb its only an hour away. we have everything melb has but just a smaller version, so theres a bit more community, not too busy.. Perfect! you should live here

summer
Newcastle. I think people in general are nice, it is close to Sydney (about 2 hrs drive to downtown), you are by the coastline. I liked living there, wish we were there again (moved to Chicago since 2005)...

Definately Adelaide! Hills, beaches, city, country, wine regions... everything is within 40 minutes drive of the city... you can get some fantastic houses for MUCH less than sydney, we are surrounded by parks and plenty of shopping in rundle mall, harbour town and melbourne street/king william street if your a bit more upmarket.... we have everything for everyone - and our city is easier to get arond without getting lost, i love sitting on the bank of the river torrens overlooking the city at night, just beautiful

Most people of course are going to say there own city :)

I live in Adelaide which is ok, smaller than most the other cities though

Its very arty here

Cairns is a lovely place very friendly and tropical up the top of Australia nice scenery
