Enjoy yourself. The people of New Zealand are surprisingly nice, happy, and generous...you might want to never return. It's almost like visiting a foreign planet. Have a great trip, dear girl!

Don't. Especially for a woman. Find someone to go with. If anything happens to you such as broken bones or a bad sprain, someone is there to help you through it.

Be aware and have fun!

You can stay at the most amazing hostel base backpackers. They have all-women floors where you are in total luxury and even get an Aveda pack. These rooms are only slightly more expensive.

They have them in NZ and Australia.

Find a companion.

Take a sheep along and barter for you life when you see people making loud strange gestures and noises at you! Otherwise, take a quick self-defense class and/or take me along and I'll protect you with my New Ray-gun! ;-) ...Have Fun - you've got one life to live; make the best of it.

P.S. Your backpack better be light but still come equipped with all kinds of emergency items, including but not limited to the following: a basic medical kit specially for treating foot problems, insect bites, fever, etc., wearable anti-insect net/accessories, a decent hat, matches in a zip-lock plastic bag, a good lens, bug spray, sun screen lotion, maps, a good compos, GPS, emergency local telephone numbers and contacts, layer clothing, operable cell phone, money stashed in hidden places (and on your person too), emergency energy bars and dried soups/food, a nice compact military-style metal cooking set (pots, pans, cups and utensils), a second good/comfortable pair of boots (better than shoes against possible snake bite scenarios), at the very least a good camping knife, some pepper spray for self-defense, a set of binoculars, a decent digital camera, some pictures of home and loved ones, a note indicating who to contact in case of an emergency, an overall emergency plan, the book that you've always wanted to read but never found the time to, some additional water for emergencies, a small sewing kit, additional sunglasses, a good insurance policy that covers overseas emergency situations and expenses, a book on survival strategies in the wild, a pen and some paper, a large piece of tough and impermeable plastic sheet, a great state-of-the- art sleeping bag, a loud noise-maker, a good whistle, some light but tough rope, a miniature fishing apparatus and lure, a great flash light, and a whole bunch of courage. I hope something I said here would end up saving your life in an emergency! Good Luck!

Depends on where your going in NZ

Stealin things from backpackers at tourist spots is common so MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS HAVE YOUR GEAR IN SIGHT

go to places like rotorua, taupo, bay of islands, queenstown, kaikoura, wellington.

Stay too tourist bars as there are more people do the same thing as you

Kiwipacker is alway fun to do

What are you into since I don't know I can't tell you much more then that

I went alone as a 23 year old woman and had a fantastic time. New Zealand is very safe compared to most countries but you should still, of course, take good care of yourself as you would at home. If you are staying in Backpacker's Accommodation / Youth Hostels, you are bound to meet other women travelling alone (all ages - not just young ones!) so there is always someone for company when you feel you'd need it.
If you're going out onto backcountry trails etc., just make sure someone knows where you are. You could take the same precautions when going out at night around town. Most hostels have a book where you can (but don't have to) sign out. This is purely for your own safety so that the staff know your plans in case anything should happen to you.
Just use your common sense and you'll have a great time!

Even though New Zealand is considered safe compared to other countries, I strongly advise to pair up with another backpacker while hitch-hiking. I don't want to put you off, but I have just finished seeing a news article on TV about a female backpacker being murdered while hitch-hiking. It is a very rare case, but shows you it can happen. Have your wits about you. Try and find a companion at a backpackers' place and venture off together.
