What is the best city to live in in New Zealand??

I am a nurse so would have to be near a quite big hospital, also quite a lively area, with clubs and pubs, but not too busy! I would also like to be able to do really interesting outdoor activities in my spare time, like skiing in the winter!

I think Christchurch would suit you better - Alot cheaper to live than Auckland and ski feilds are nearby. Also a great night life.

My sister-in-law is a nurse there and loves it

For info on hospitals there http://www.localeye.info/pages/?catId=253

or http://www.cdhb.govt.nz/chc/

or http://www.moh.govt.nz/moh.nsf/indexmh/contact-us-public-hospitals

for ski feilds in the area click on http://snow.co.nz/areas/area_index.asp

Good luck

Swenysteve, we all know nz is a million times btter than dry old australia. Just ask Jules

If you want all of those, I would say either Auckland or Christchurch. Auckland is more multicultural and is abigger and alot of things to do, ie bush walks, beaches etc. Chch has alot of mountains, more rivers etc. But if you reall want to go skiing in Auckland, there's always the indoor Snowplanet

Auckland without a doubt, i lived in Auckland for 6 years, best city ever.. good hospitals and has alot of clubs and pubs, the and my aunt works in a hospital there, and is very well payed she loves it there, no stress or anything the only problem is to get certified there.. which is a bit difficult, but once you do get it every hospital in auckland around the city will be asking for you to join the team
As for skiing Auckland doesnt have it, but you can do all kinds of activities there

I like Auckland. Lovely & lively city!!! but lil bit faraway from ski area... Another option is Christchurch in South Island. By the way i love Queenstown for winter trip!

check out Hamilton... it has a fairly big hospital and is a large centre but not as big as Auckland or Christchurch. and is approx 2 and a half to 3 hrs drive from the central north island skifields.

I moved to New Zealand a year ago and it's amazing here. I love Auckland - This place seriously grows on you. If you want to go skiing in winter, you'll have to drive for about 4 hours to the mountains from Auckland. Queenstown in great for skiing actually and it's also incredibly beautiful. In fact, there are so many places you can live in NZ that will cater to your outdoor needs.

In all honesty, NZ is quite overpriced with certain things BUT that is just like every other country. I am not a skilled person but i manage to pay rent, drive a car, have plenty of groceries etc. It's not like you will not be able to survive here - we live way better than what we used to in our previous country. It's predictable for Aussies to bag NZ down, as they usually do (as the one bloke did in this thread), but I done my OE in Australia and honestly, NZ has a lot more character. Australia was good but the biggest problem is that it's full of Australians!

I would also recommend Christchurch. Its the biggest city in the south island, but its not like Auckland in thats its too busy.

There is easy access to skiing as there are several ski fields nearby (only has Mt Ruapehu in the entire North Island), there are lots of activities availale in Chrsitchurch...its known as a cycling city as its so flat (but there are hills to the south which is very popular for mountain biking and walking)
The Chrsitchurch hospital is big and has facilities that service much of the South Island (that Dunedin doesn't do). There are other hospitals in the city too St Margarets which is the other main public hospital with St George's and Southern Cross being the private ones....I have a feeling there are some other smaller ones too.

Dunedin has a good hospital, quite lively areas around the University with dozens of pub.
Ski fields are only a few hours drive away.

Tauranga. Growing, vibrant city on the eastern cost of the north island. Great beaches in the summer and an easy few hours drive to the ski slopes.

Only one public hospital, with several private ones.

http://www.tauranga.co.nz/ This site gives you some general information about the place.

Good luck in your job hunt.

Go to AUstralia instead. New Zealand is over priced and poor service. If you do move here and then go visit AUstralia you will only wish you ahd moved there to begin with. I am here on a two year contract and then I'm outta here. Not a good place to live or to even visit. Australia is so much better.
