The large country towns or provincial cities can be good. How old are the children? They might be better at an elementary school or high school in a large country town than at one in a state capital. Housing is usually cheaper though some goods are more expensive. Ballarat in Victoria is close to the state capital, Melbourne and has good facilities itself. Likewise Toowoomba in Queensland is fairly close to the state capital, Brisbane, and has it's own good facilities.
Canberra is also a good place. Plenty of employment and very good schools. Cool in winter and rather dry at present.
If you are willing to be well away from the state capitals there are several larger country towns like Townsville (Qld) and Armidale (NSW) or even Dubbo in NSW which is growing rapidly and set to become a transport hub.
All these cities have their own web sites. |

It depends on how old your children are and if you have a full extended family living with you. Perth is very family friendly, and has been taking more and more immigrants from the United Kingdom over the past few years. There's also a lot of employment in Western Australia, and work at the mines pays very well - $90,000 - $150,000 a year depending on your skills. The downside about Perth is that real estate prices are rising due to the high levels of employment. It is also the most isolated capital city in the world. But the lifestyle is brilliant. The schools are some of the best in the country, and the University of Western Australia is in the top 8 best. There are loads of parks and recreational areas for families to get together, and there are plenty of indoor activities for families and children of all ages to do as well. People are friendly for the most part, and there's just about a social group for any kind of sport or hobby.
A good alternative is also Brisbane in Queensland if you prefer bigger cities and more people. It has some pretty cool places to hang out with families. The schools are good as well. The beaches are OK, but I have found them to be better on the west coast.
Some Perth and Brisbane links below so you can compare the two. |

All the states are good
I'm in Qld 7 its great... but we are getting short on water because 1500 people flock to our city every fortnight & we will all proberly have to buy a rain tank if we want to keep our garden
I suppose that is telling you Qld is the best State if they are all flocking to it!! |

There are only two cities I would recommend for families - Brisbane, Queensland and Perth, Western Australia.
These two have the resources without the high populations, and are very clean. Unemployment is low, and there are many beaches and other attractions for children.
Other capitals are big, busy, highly populated, more expensive to live in, and not as clean.
The only problem with Perth is that it is very far away from other cities, but is still a fantastic place. |

Aussie is a nice country, I wouldn't live in Sydney, expensive! If you want to live in a big city but not be in the poor house, Adelaide and Perth are lovely, I like Brisbane too. Melbourne is fabulous! If you like warm weather, WA or Queensland or SA. Byron Bay is lovely. Have you thought about NZ? Different to Aussie, but lovely! Adelaide or Perth, big but not busy, off the beaten track without sacrificing lifestyle. Hope this is helpful |

There are two great cities, Sydney and Brisbane, Sydney has about 4,000,000 people Brisbane about 1,000,000.
Brisbane is a little too laid back for me but they get great weather and the Gold Coast is close by and brilliant.
Either city is OK for families. I live in Sydney and go to Brisbane/Gold Coast for holidays.
Sydney can get very hot - my hottest day was 47C also very humid Dec, Jan. Winters are great, average temp about 15C |
