I second the Territory Wildlife Park just south of Darwin. We took our three little kids and it was a fantastic day out. If we had more time, we would've gone back for a second look.
Let's face it, Australia just has great zoos! The best and most exciting way to see animals though is in their natural habitat. Australia has such beautiful and varied animals, a camping trip would be the best way to go!
If you want to see kangaroos: anywhere in the bush at dusk
If you want to see crocodiles: Windjana Gorge in the Kimberley
If you want to see tropical fish: Ningaloo or Great Barrier Reef
If you want to see penguins: Penguin Island in WA
You could visit your local wetlands to see some interesting birdlife and check out your local CALM office for a list of local species and check off how many you have seen.
Good luck! |

There is not one "best" zoo in Australia. Each has its own good points. A lot of people seem to like Melbourne zoo or Perth zoo. I can't comment on them but I have been to Taronga zoo in Sydney which I found quite amazing. And now that a lot of upgrades has been done at Taronga, I believe people a raving on about it (The recent addition of several elelphants from Thailand also helps -one of them is only two years old! Cute!)
Dubbo Western Plain zoo is great. It is big and open range so large animals lives in very similar to their natural habitat. It will take you two days to see everything.
For aquatic animals - Sydney Aquarium is excellent!
The National zoo and aquarium in Canberra is not big but ok. It has tours where you can go and feed the animals. A lot of people do this just for the thrill of sitting down with the world's fastest but friendliest land animal - the cheetah.
So.... it is your pick really. Overall though I would pick Taronga Zoo in Sydney as it offer "everything" to see in one place and handy location as well as picturesque way of getting there if you take the ferry across the habour. |

I personally think the best zoo is Melbourne Zoo. It's pretty big and has a wide range of animals and the property is pretty interesting - always being improved.
Sydney's Taronga Zoo is ok but was built more on the views (which I can't deny are good) rather than being a good zoo in itself.
The Territory Wildlife Park south of Darwin was a surpsrise to me. I loved going ther because it's almost like being in the animals habitat as you walk through the park. It's pretty cool.
The crocodile parks up there are really just a tourist business and the Crocodylus Park is much better than the Crocodile Farm, the latter smells like the algae has built up over decades.
Have fun! |

Depends on what you are looking for, my (then) seven year old son and I visited Irwin's Australia Zoo in 2003 and enjoyed it very much. The live shows where pretty dramatic and one of our favorite mementos is a picture where they draped a python over our shoulders. When we were there, there was a larger area under construction, I'm sure by now it's probably finished.
I visited a lot of other sanctuaries and the like as well, one of the others I enjoyed a lot was Healesville in Victoria, outside Melbourne. They had an interesting aquarium setup so that you could see platypi up close. |

I have never been to the Australian Zoo, but I would sure like too.
I have been to the zoo's in Tasmania, Sydney and Perth. I really liked Perth out of all of these. Although Sydney is really good as well. |
