Compared to where?
I shop for a family of three adults and a dog and manage very well on around $120 a week in the supermarkets... I do look for specials, with about $20-$25 a fortnight at my local fruit shop. Our electricity I thought was high and it's averaging $240 a qtr. Phone and internet is $80 a month or less, no Foxtel, no smoking and only the occasional bottle of wine.
I don't buy a lot of prepared foods, sauces, etc. as I cook from scratch. We live very well, even the dog, and I do manage to save each week. I manage my family's rentals for them and I would love them to get $800 a week... the average in the "middle" value suburbs would be around $350-$400, up to around $650 as you get to some of the inner, but older suburbs. I'm sure there are some at $800, but they really must be up market.
As far as individual grocery items go, I don't pay more than $1.79 for a 700gm multigrain loaf of bread. Milk, reduced fat, is $2.69 2 litres. I buy most of my meat from my local Supa IGA when it is on special and never pay more than $8.99 a kilo for any of it, often a lot less.
Like all things, if you are careful, take note of specials, buy just what you need and are prepared to cook your own healthy meals, you can budget quite well.
Public transport is cheap, it's a very friendly city and we have a great lifestyle. |

Well I spent $150 at the supermarket last night and bought didly squat with it! I bought no junk food, no meat, some fruit and veg and some grocery regulars. So $150 later I still open up the fridge or pantry and complain that we have no food. So yeah, food is expensive. |

Depends on your budget really..... |

Well, I pay 240 rent per fortnight, about 50 in groceries per fortnight, about 30 in fuel per fortnight, about 15 in parking costs per fortnight, 30 a month for bills, 50 a month for electricity. I get about 420 a fortnight, so by the time I pay for the necessities there aint much left! |

My partner & I spend:
$ 500.00 a week on mortgage repayments
Approx $ 200.00 a fortnight on groceries (we found if you do your main shopping at woolies or cole and do your meat and veggies at a private butcher and green grocer you save heaps more)
$ 100.00 a week on fuel (Min)
$ 400.00 every 3 months on electricity
$ 100.00 month phone & internet
$ 300.00 a month on misc (eg. foxtel etc)
Rates we have $30.00 a fortnight direct debited and are now over $200.00 in credit.
We both don't smoke (so save money their)
Hope this give you an idea! :P |

Depends. Shop around, don't do all your shopping in the big two monopolisers. Go to the markets if you can as well.
Rentals are camparable to other cities if not cheaper.
Public transport is relatively cheap.
And fuel, well what can I say? It'll never be satisfactory. |

We spend about $150 per week on food etc for a family of 3.
But things vary, eg: The price of Strawberries varies from $4 per kg to $12 per kg, at the height of the Strawberry season here, depending purely on your location in Australia.
Bread ? you can pay between $1.10 and $4.00 for decent white sliced 700 gm loaf, depending on which shop you use.
Steak is between $6 and $25 per kg
Electric bills are about $500 every 3 months.
I have some accurate cost of living records for the last few years if you are interested. Message me. |

Everything in Brisbane is crappy (They overcharge for everything)
Melbourne on the other hand is more family friendly and you are able to save more money. |
