When I was in England, I had to explain to difference all the time!!
1. New Zealanders like to remind australians that they were started by convicts, while Nz was made of hardworking people looking to move elsewhere.
2. Scenery and size. Oz is HEAPS bigger, so everything takes longer to get to places, while Nz is similar to the UK. NZ also has mountains...lots of them and lakes (Oz has the odd one).
Scenery is varied, both have rainforests (more tropical in Oz), coastlines,
3. Culture. Oz has aboringenes while NZ has maori (and also a strong polynesian influence. Auckland is the polynesian capital of the world. The aborigenies and maori are quite different in their culture, language, art, buildings etc.
4. Government....Nz has a type of government called MMP (mixed member proportional) which means there are several parties in power at once (in coalitions, with the main party leading it), while Oz has states with people who run them (forgotton name) as well as the main government.
5. Currency is different
6. Populations. NZ has about 4 million, while Oz has about 20million people.....a lot of those are NZers who live there.
7. Oz has better pay rates than Nz, and is why a lot of people head over there. I would say their health system is better than NZ (as some Nzers travel to Oz for treatment).
8. Nz does not have snakes, crocodiles and only 1 poisonous spider (and v rare, only found on coastal beaches, although there are places with Oz spiders, the white tail in particular..not poisonousm but can bite).
9. Nz has lots of rare native birds and unusual insects. Oz has marsupials (not found in NZ naturally).
10 Accent...we can tell the difference!!! There are also different words used eg chilli bin vs eski, duvet vs dooner, jandles vs thongs, togs vs cozzie
I can go on. There are famous people that make each country proud, but a lot of kiwis have been made australian (eg phar lap...ok thats a horse, Russell Crowe..ok he likes being australian....but there others)
hope that can put things into perspecitve |

Australians and New Zealanders are displeased by such questions-- but to clear up any confusion: New Zealand wins rugby games against Australia, Australia wins cricket games against New Zealand. New Zealanders and Australians have subtly different accents-- in general it's hard to tell them apart unless you come from there. New Zealand has more sheep than people, is about the size of Japan- similar land mass to Oregon- and comprised of two main islands (North and South) and is to the east of Australia, they are separated by the Tasman sea. Australia is a continent, about the size of mainland USA, has seven states, a northern territory and more sheep than New Zealand. The capital city is Canberra (not Sydney). The flags are very similar, white stars vs red stars (Australian flag has an extra star at the bottom). Both are commonwealth nations of Great Britain and lovely places to visit. In the end, Australians are 'Aussies' and New Zealanders are 'Kiwis' and even though there is a sort of 'Merry war' between the nations, they really get on quite well. |

The big difference I find is that New Zealand is very green and lush, while Australia (esp. away from the coast) is brownish and dry.
That makes all the difference in flyfishing. |

now shearlin... new zealand is not located above australia. it is to the side below australia. there is really no difference apart from we are two different countries with two different accents and we are very competitive on our sports, we love to kick aussies *** in the rugby, netball and anything else we can beat them in, then again when we need to band together we do, we are both ruled under the british crown, we have our own currencys and everything else... we dont need visas to get into each others countries, its kind of like a big brother thing, australia is our big brother, kinda like the U.S and canada.
hope that helped |

It is the same difference as between the USA and France. Different country, different people etc.
To the bright sparks out there Australia has six states (Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland) and two territories (Northern Territory, Australian Capital Territory).
We are part of the Commonwealth of Nations that recognise the Queen as our monarch. We are not part of Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales and smaller outlying islands) or the United Kingdom (Great Britain and Northern Ireland). |
