British comedian John Cleese would have said, 'Palmerston North is the most beautiful city in New Zealand.' The folks from Palmy have even re-named their rubbish dump after him. |

Queenstown - alps, lake - beautiful. Wellington is great on the larger scale, historic houses, oriental bay is the nicest spot especially when the fountain is going and you have all the Norfolk Pines along the Parade. Christchuch is nice in an English sort of way. |

Queenstown, without a doubt. It took my breath away for weeks after visiting when I just thought of it. Auckland isn't that pretty itself but you can catch a 20 min ferry to some of the most beautiful islands. Awesome. |

Defiantly Nelson (top of the south island)
I've lived there for many years before coming back to Aussie
Nelson has it all ...........azure skies and wide open spaces, beaches and lakes, spectacular national parks and unique landforms, vineyards and gourmet cafés, artists and galleries, entrepreneurs and boutique shopping experiences...a uniquely Nelson way of life.
Nelson region combines the finest elements of the New Zealand experience and delivers them across stunning geography, sun-ripened at the perfect latitude under New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours. |

It probably is Auckland, particularly the parts on the Waitemata harbour. The otherside, on the Manukau harbour is a bit of a dump.
Auckland is unique in NZ in having volcanic cones rising up across the city, and they tend to have trees, sheep and cows on them while the surrounding area is covered in houses and motorways etc. |

It depends on how you define beautiful, and replies from NZers are likely to be biased.
If you mean scenically, then Wellington (on a good day) would be the best of the 4 main cities. Auckland isn't even worth listing.
The towns in the Southern Alps of the South island- Queenstown, Wanaka, Tekapo- they are spectacular. |

hmmmmm do you mean asthetically or the surroundings they are in????
I love Christchurch...i think its one of the more attractive places around, but I am not sure I would actually call any city or town even "beautiful" in the same sense I would call Prague or Paris Beautiful!
However the scenery makes a difference and I love looking over the Canterbury plains and Southern Alps and seeing the see from the Port Hills overlooking Christchurch...
Queentown has to rank high with the stunning mountain views and lake......
Nelson, I agree is nice setting too.
I would probalby think Wellington has it over Auckland for being having better views maybe...but thats my opinion. |

I think probably Christchurch, which is known as the Garden City. It has a spectacular botanical gardens which puts some other cities to shame. |

Profit from it..

Dunedin in the South Island. |

Auckland is the most beautiful city to me. It has the biggest Polynesian population in the world, it's New Zealand's melting pot. I love my city because of it's cultural diversities. Contrary to what kayjay has to say Auckland is celebrated for it's natural beauty, culture and cleanliness. |

i am also biased. i love my home town of dunedin. it is small has beautiful old buildings, golden beaches a world renown rose garden. beautiful marae, then i also love cromwell and how it is set out, its nice and small everything is within walking distance. it has snow in the winter and so hot during summer, it has swimming holes and the only thing it is missing is the beach.
i think kiwis will be so subjective with a question like this. i dont like huge flat places (chch) or overpopulated metropolitans (auck) i am a small town guy and love the rustic beautiful that the otago province offers. |

This question (and similar ones) is asked with such monotonous regularity that it's a wonder it sometimes doesn't appear as 2 consecutive questions.
It is unanswerable of course, but as you see, many try.
What one person likes, another dislikes, there's no accounting for taste.
(I will be taking a cut and paste of this reply to use in the future when this question is asked once again, as it will be. Pasting the same reply will save alot of time in typing.)
In fact, this is a 'paste'. |
