It really depends on what state you live in.
Cricket is popular Australia wide.
In New South Wales and Queensland, NRL would be the number one sport.
In Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia, AFL would be the number one.
New South Wales and Victoria have a rivalry over AFL versus NRL, as to which is better. Ironically, a Sydney team made the AFL grandfinal for two years running in 2005/2006 and a Melbourne team won the NRL grandfinal for two years running 2006/2007.
Though it would be relativily close as to which sport tops popularity, it would be sometimes simular to:
1. Footy (AFL or NRL depending on state)
2. Cricket
3. Soccer (European Football)
4. Rugby Union
5. Lawn Bowls (ok that ones a joke, then again, its quite popular amongst our senior citizens)
That is how most Aussies see the rankings but I vaguely recall hearing that Soccer is actually the most popular sport. |
