Ask Mike
Hi,

According to the CIA World Factbook (a great resource, by the way), there are roughly 20,600,856 people living in Australia.

That may sound like a big number, but considering Australia is one of the biggest countries in the world (geographically speaking), the number is actually quite small.

The United States, which is only about 15% larger than Australia, has a population of around 303,824,646.

On 15 May 2008 at 09:03:28 (Canberra time), the resident population of Australia is projected to be:

21,300,022

This projection is based on the estimated resident population at 30 September 2007 and assumes growth since then of:
one birth every 1 minute and 55 seconds,
one death every 3 minutes and 58 seconds,
a net gain of one international migrant every 2 minutes and 51 seconds leading to
an overall total population increase of one person every 1 minute and 37 seconds.

EDIT: Sorry Louise, didn't see that you'd already used the same reference.
