Bloody hell whats with all the crap debate over melbournes weather???
Melbourne can be very cold in winter espcially at night and if u live further out from the city like i do in Ballarat (we had snow last week).....
Melbourne can get quite hot (yes adelaide holds the record for the longest heat wave ever recorded in australia)...
But it dosent get really hot unless once again u live further away from the city (we normally have temps that are 3-4 degrees hotter than melb in summer)
Seriously the worst thing about melbourne is the traffic (and the petrol prices)...
Melbourne has such a great night life and there are so many things to do.....You can never get bored with it.....
House prices are alot cheaper in the outer suburbs especially if u head towards the western suburbs..(i grew up in the west in sunshine)...

i would just like to say that contrary to what other people have said, its really not that cold in melbourne, and the heat waves aren't really that bad. also i think the beaches are quiet nice.
the only real drawback would be that there can be a lot of traffic in the city. fortunantaly they have a very reliable and effective public transport system.
MELBOURNE IS THE BEST

city : being approached by street beggars (sometimes) + the traffic . public transport its more convenient for me :)

Melbourne does chop and change weather pretty unexpectedly. The further out you live the worse the public transport. If you live within around one hour from the centre of Melbourne then it's great!
The truly worse thing about Melbourne.....not enough hours in the day to do it all!

GeorgiaSnack
id just like to point out to Sharna Eagles, that Mel was right with the heat waves. we had 2 weeks of 38-42. thankyou very much. and we have NO rain at all.

worse thing about melbourne - once you have lived here you wont want to live anywhere else!

OzNana
Worse thing about Melbourne is if you have to leave it (I had to). Seriously, weather is a little unpredictable in winter, but that's all. It is a good place.

Well I live in Melbourne, so I am probably Bias.
We do have 4 seasons in one day, it can go from hot to cold very quickly. Imagine waking up to a beatiful warm morning, thinking at-shirt will do and then be stranded freezing in the city just a few hours later without so much as a jacket!
Our public transport is ok and does get you from A to B, however, I'd say it can be unrealiable with many trains being late/ cancelled etc. And Taxis...omg, don't even go there! They are usless, expensive and 90% of the time the driver doesnt speak proper english or know where OBVIOUS suburbs and roads are. Traffic in the city isn't great, especially during peak hour on the major roads and highways.
And yes the 2am ban sucks, BUT, it doesnt apply everywhere. Have a look on the melbourne.vic.gov website and it actually tells you the pubs and clubs which are excempt.
Other than that, we do have amazing beaches, things to do and Melbournians as a bunch are a friendly lot who are willing to have a chat and a bevvie with anyone, esp the youngens. Best of Luck!

Just to clarify, there is heatwaves in Melbourne!
Melbourne is a great place to live but having moved here from NZ, I did find that it can be hard to meet people when you first get here. Getting a job in hospitality or an industry that exposes you to more people each day is a good way to make friends. Other bad things.. um.. it is hard to think of any, I dont' feel like indigenous australians are very well represented or cared for in the city, it can also seem that there is a fair bit of prejudice between the various cultures that live in the many suburbs that make up the city. In saying that, melbourne also is an exciting place and you can often feel like you are discovering a whole new city every time you go to a different suburb. Plenty to do and see if you make the effort and also absolutely beautiful summers. You should move!

We have very unpredictable weather in Melbourne (Victoria has often been referred to having four seasons in one day!!), but after awhile you get used to the weather here.

the traffic, the reliance on brown coal, and the government's stubborn refusal to consider any other solution to our water shortage than to build a desalination plant

there is nothing bad about Melbourne in my opinion.
i love it down here, the only bad thing is probly traffic congestion but what city doesnt have traffic problems these days lol?.

sure the weather can be like 4 seasons in one day but the atmosphere of melbourne is just amazing :)

♥Amber is a New Momma
It can get very cold here, but its nice to have some different weather!
I love it here.

Mel
The nights in winter can be bloody freezing!

Also I don't like AFL but they do have a good NRL team.

Also they have a tendency to experience bush fires (in the rural areas) and heat waves in summer.

EDIT - A lot of people have mentioned the traffic, but the best thing about Melbourne is the public transport. You don't need to drive. That being said, AFL day the trams are packed.

I moved to Melbourne from Toronto Canada....I went for 3 months and ended up staying 6 years! The worst thing for me was having to leave!
I've been back in Toronto for 2 yrs this month but "I still call Australia home".

the traffic wen der is an AFL match also the weather in winter

As posted above, the 2am lockout has had a huge impact on younger adults. It has done well on the violence side of things though. When it comes to the environment, the weather here, and the beaches are terrible. The entertainment part of it is good, but it really depends what part of Melbourne you are planning on moving to. I highly suggest you stay on the outer suburbs.

Good luck with the move!!

jade=)
i guess some people (probably older than me) would say the 2am lockout of melbourne's nightclubs and other venues
but otherwise i honestly can't think of anything really bad about melbourne

The weather is very changeable, which takes some getting used to and traffic gets bad at peak hour. Probably the worst thing about Melbourne though is the endless suburbs. The cool part of Melbourne is very cool but once you go beyond it you are in a suburban wasteland that seems to go forever and because it's all flat the view never even changes. I love Melbourne city. I hate the outer burbs. Hate em hate em hate em.

1) Weather - Winter is freezing... Although probably not if you lived in Europe..
2) No good Chocolate Drinks - they only make 'em good in Israel! :)
3) Shops are closed after 5pm - really weird :|

clucky36
The worst is having to put up with Victorians bagging the hell out of wherever you came from. Once you learn how to handle that by being diplomatic then it's great. Just learn the road rules especially with a tram stops and hook turns where applicable

kiko s
My reasons:

When you will come to Melbourne yof course you will miss Canada a lot.
The weather is unpredictable
Current water restrictions,as you cant use the water for everything, including car washing, garden washing etc.
A lot of crime in the transport,so i suggest you to have car instead of using the transport, therefore dont use the transport at night, late.

It is the coldest city/state in Australia, and very very cold in winter. it has some good beaches but probably the last place in Australia were you could/want to go to the beach! the nightlife is good, but if you are an our doors person, hope you like rain! anyway Australia all round is good and you will like it either way, just not my favorite state to live.

EDIT:
Mel -- your kidding yourself, heat waves in Melbourne!

GeorgiaSnack -- your intitled to your opinion like everyone is but please get your facts right and not just guess. Seeing as adelaide hold the record heat wave of 11 consecutive days of 35 degrees celsius or higher and perth the next with 10 consecutive day of 35 degrees celsius or higher, melbounre could not possibly be 2 weeks between 38-42. http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/story/0,21598,23367292-2761,00.html
