It is best to have a car to get around Kakadu as the park itself is huge ( taking several hours to drive across).
Most places are accessible by normal car - Ubirr rock (as seen in Crocodile Dundee) to watch a spectacular sunset over the wetlands - and also to see some interesting aboriginal rock art - including a painting of a tasmanian tiger(obviously extinct from the mainland for thousands of years). You can also get to Nourlangie rock which has both beautiful views and interesting rock art - there are explanations of the stories behind the art on the walking track and you can also get more information at the information station in Jabiru. You can see the red cliffs of the escarpment running through the park.
There is an aboriginal artifacts and paintings museum near the "yellow water cruise" further south in the park.
The yellow waters cruise takes you to see crocodiles, birdlife and native flora. - all of these things accessible without a 4X4.
With a 4 wheel drive you can also get to Jim Jim Falls, twin falls and Barramundi Gorge - all are spectacular and worth going to if you can afford a 4x4.
Remember some areas are closed even to 4 wheel drives until early April because of the wet season.
It is worth the trip - make sure you allow a few days to see it. |

Oh you need a car preferably a 4wd to go off of the beaten track, unless you do a tour. There are ancient aboriginal rock arts. Water falls and swimming spots but oh be careful make sure you only swim where a ranger has told you its safe. Plenty of crocs you can take a trip when you are there through some of the places exploring by boat. Litchfield national park is a lovely day trip as well. |

There are very good guided tours with high-quality, comfortable accommodation available. I would do this myself if I could afford it!
Here's a link to a company that has Aboriginal guides who will teach you about the oldest living cultures on Earth and deep knowledge of the native flora and fauna:

The best thing would be to hire a campervan and travel by road. |

You can see Kakadu without a car by going on a tour but if possible rent a 4wd toyota landcruiser camper, Brits rentals have them. I used to be a tour guide in Kakadu and i love it. On the way to Kakadu you could take a cruise on the Jumping Crocodile cruise at Adelaide River then visit the Windows On The Wetlands up the road, very interesting, next there is a bird hide on the right hand side of the highway once you enter Kakadu. amazing to sit in the hide and watch all the magpie geese and other birds. Make sure you visit Ubirr Rock or as we used to call it, Obiri rock. Its a fairly easy walk to the top with lots of aboriginal art along the way, the view at the top is worth the sweating you will do,do this in the morning or late afternoon and always carry a hat and water bottles with you. There are a few camp grounds near here so you could spend the night. Jabiri township is a good place to stock up on supplies and vist the National Parks Information Centre which is really good. Heading south is Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls which if you dont have the time to drive in and see is great from a helicopter, tours on offer in Jabiri. Nourlangie Rock is a must. Allow at least an hour to explore here. Lots of art to see and the view from the top is gorgeous. Cooinda has a good camp ground and from here you can go on a boat cruise around Yellow Waters Billabong, i reccomend the sunset cruise for photography but the sunrise cruise is also beautiful with possibly more wildlife to see. Next is Barramundi Gorge my favourite spot and right at the southern end of the park is Waterfall Creek or Gunlom as its known. I think it is 32klms of dirt road to get to it but it's well worth it. Climb to the top of the falls, 500m. You wont be sorry. There is an excellent camp here as well. When you leave the park near Pine Creek you can turn left and head back to Darwin via Litchfield National Park which is also stunning. Some say that Litchfield is better than Kakadu but that would be wrong. the 2 can not be compared because Litchfield is mainly waterfalls whereas Kakadu is wetlands , waterfalls, rock climbing and aboriginal art and so much more. i like them both. enjoy your trip ! |
