Brisbane - its a huge city but so layed back and the people are so nice!
Usually warm weather - hardly never cold - so good for those who love the warm weather.
Its in the middle of fabulous places you can go visit on weekends. 30 mins from the Gold Coast which has its theme parks - you can entertain your kids/teens or yourself every weekend of the year if you have a season pass! Gorgeous beaches. And the National Parks.
You have great markets and shops - weekends for the city and markets at Manly and some other places as well for a little longer drive.
Then you have the Sunshine Coast about 1hr or more north (Depending where in Brisbane you are) with all its attractions! A few parks oe Australia Zoo or Underwater world. Gorgeous beaches. Foresty areas for camping which are gorgeous.
Then you can go west and do things about 30-40min west - such as a country picnic or visit a lavender farm. Or see some gorgeous waterfalls and or do bush walking. Or visit Toowoomba especially during their gardening show week/weeks and or see and visit the sites of Toowoomba.
So really it offers the best of all worlds as its right in the middle of everything!
Brisbane city itself has a man made beach if you dont want to drive 30min to the Gold Coast. Maybe 40min for those on the north? not sure but from South Brisbane its 35min.
Brisbane Southbank also has the museum, art gallery etc and or you can pop over to Roma St Parklands or the City Botanical Gardens or Mt Cootha and see the Botanic Gardens there and the lookout.
Theres lots of independent great bands in and around the city playing most nights and weekends. Lots of artistic things happening in and around the city. Especially at the Power House.
Brisbane city night life is safer than other places. Theres the Casino.
But I would say the nice people win it more than anything else and the layed back attitude! |

Sydney - Darling Harbour is breathtaking.
It's also where I believe my Gt. Gt. grandparents lived (Campertown) as Free Settlers back in the 1860's.
Unfortunately, Gt. gramps is said to have worked his passage to England, married and settled back here or I could be an Aussie, too. |

i like sydney, i love the people, the history, the harbour, the nice people there and all the stuff that u can do in sydney and around its surroundings. Climates also great!
however i also enjoyed melbourne. also verythick in history and very perserved compared to sydney.
all the other cities seem to be a little more "underdeveloped" compared to these two! |

I don't think any sane person would choose Darwin.
Sydney is the best for almost everything,
Melbourne is better for a night out at a restaurant, but has iffy weather and not much to do in the outdoors,
Brisbane has better weather, better beaches, but only has 1.5mil people, thus less business & infastructure |

Perth, because it is far enough away from the rat race of the eastern states. |

Hobart- i moved here from Sydney nearly 3 years ago, at the time i considered other options but Hobart was my choice and glad of it.
Hobart is small but beautiful, we have most of the basic services etc of the bigger cities without most of the problems. I managed to buy a lovely Georgian house with views 15 minutes walk to work for less than an inner city flat in Sydney or Melbourne. I also like the climate better. |

Canberra. The pride of the nation. Your country's capital.
Ben, are you jealous that the ACT Brumbies keep flogging the NSW Waratahs in the Super 14?
We've got two championships. How many have you guys got mate? |

Canberra, because with only twenty minutes or so driving you can be out of the ACT and in another state. |
